Dating from the late 18th century but rebuilt in 1880, this place is easily accessed from Maryland station (in east London not the East End as claimed) opposite. Despite the legend IRON MAIDEN in neon lighting to the exterior, I only came here because I was desperate for the loo and not out of a burning ambition to visit.
Well described below, the interior is very basic with a dark colour scheme (black? blue?), modern pale herringbone floor, modern furniture; nothing from the late 19th century seems to have been retained. Décor amounts to rock memorabilia, seemingly all signed by members of the group whose name escapes me, their music playing over the stereo. Customers seemed to be tattooed types with beards and shaven heads, then students and a surprising number of East Europeans, the overall ambience being somewhat sedate, certainly not the sea of madness one might expect in a rockers’ pub.
Despite the heavy promotion of Robinson’s Trooper (obviously), it’s in bottle only with no cask, basic keg stuff running free with a half of Gamma Ray, £3.10, the number of the beast.
If you live locally the Cart may make for a convenient stop when coming home, but otherwise this isn’t my type of pub, but that said it makes for something different. It’s not hell on earth, but equally I didn’t feel the need to run to the hills.

The Birthplace of Iron Maiden indeed! Loads of Iron Maiden stuff on display with signed drumskins, records, artwork etc. I had been looking forward to this pub and I am glad I made the pilgrimage. There is a live music basement which is on till 3am. Plenty Maiden tribute acts as you would expect! On the beer front it was no surprise to see almost the full range of Robinson's Trooper ales in bottles. I'd happily call again. Well worth a visit.

This is a single room pub with a bar stocked with standard draught products running along the back wall. It was empty during my recent weekday afternoon visit apart from a couple of lads playing on the pool table in the centre of the room and the barmaid who was on her hands and knees scrubbing the bar stool legs. Once she was behind the bar she was polite and served me a decent pint of Guinness which I enjoyed sitting at one of the tables that line the exterior of the pub. I counted four screens for showing Sky Sports and there is also a projector and an old sign is still in the window boasting that this was one of the first pubs to ever show 3D football. There is also a stage area for the live music on Friday and Saturday nights and the karaoke on Sundays and I imagine that there is a late license on all three nights. On the edge of the stage a remark is made about this being the birthplace of Iron Maiden and it does appear that they played here several times in 1976 and this was the first pub to have them as a regular band.

This place probably comes to life at the weekends or when there is football on, but I doubt that I will be returning any time soon.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Cart & Horses

Odd place, with the pool table taking centre stage (giving the incongruous effect of an alter). No real ale, and not many of the lager dispensers seemed to be working either. Surprisingly polite barman.

It is true that Iron Maiden played in this pub at 1976?
