The Berkeley is a large Wetherspoons that is a good walk uphill from the train station.
This was the starting point for my Bristol Crawl.
Once inside There is a massive room with the bar facing, the rear area is much larger than the front area, there is a raised area to the front which has tall tables and chairs, the rear area has more comfortable seating.
The choice of guest beers on the bar was pretty poor,so i had a drink of Butcombe Bitter which was a decent drink after a long wait, the other beers noted were Ruddles Bitter,GK Abbot and Doom Bar.
Regarding the service, this was probably the worst i have come across in visiting over 300 Wetherspoons, when i arrived the bar was like the Mary Selest,so i went to the toilet, when i got back there were some blokes looking round for bar staff and even considering going behind the bar to serve themselves.
I thought the pub was decent enough, but the service was very poor.

Not just a shop conversion but a whole arcade and parts of it do rather resemble one of those small up market shopping arcades in London's West End. It's well described below and on my visit was busy with students and a few of the daytime brigade. The bar is just a long narrow strip with room for serving at the street end of it and that appeared to be the only place you were likely to get served with just two staff on. The result of this was that the service was abysmal with two queues forming.
The beer choice was also rubbish despite the two sets of six hand pumps. These had two unused, two available soon, four ciders, the two GK beers, Wood's Shropshire Lad and Exmoor Beast. I went for the Exmoor Beast (£3.09) which was in reasonably good nick but the city centre prices still apply here.
I thought this was another poor JDW.

A large Wetherspoon’s pub located right opposite the university, so it’s clientele tends more towards students than the OAP’s you often get in a these establishments. It’s a good sized pub with a large, full height windows in the front bar and a selection of leather sofa’s to relax in and watch the world go by. A narrower area leads up the side of the bar and it then opens out again at the rear to an area full of tables and chairs and consequently more used for dining.

There are a couple of interesting ceiling features including a giant illuminated, pink “W” as soon as you get in the pub, just to remind you where you are, and a interesting stained glass dome at the rear of the pub. It’s been open a few years now and it’s starting to look a little shabby in places, but it’s still a decent enough pub if JDW’s are your thing. There were the usual flyers advertising meal deals, including a “Christmas Dinner and a pint” option for £6.99.

Many of the beers on tap also had a festive theme and included Otter Claus, Butcombe Christmas Steps and Rocking Rudolph, complete with flashing red LED’s on the pump clip. Other beers were Holden’s Blaster, Abbot Ale, Ruddles Best, Butcombe and Bath Ale’s Ginger Hare. Good choice of ciders as well with Blackthorn, Strongbow, Thatcher’s Gold, Stowford Press, Old Rosie and Marcle Hill.

This has been going for a few years now (it opened during Britpop and was one of the first Bristol pubs I ventured into). It was a grand place on opening but is now looking rather down at heel.

A few interesting ales are usually on, though availability and quality vary tremendously. The inside is an odd mix of students (Bristol Uni is just across the road) and local cheapskates, which often makes for a strange atmosphere. The architectural selling point here is that it's a former shopping arcade, which included the Berkeley Tea Rooms. Apparently there's also a whispering gallery but I confess to never having noticed it - presumably because of the noise generated by the hoards of student drinkers makes the whispering bit somewhat redundant.

It's worth checking out some other nearby outlets first, rather than ending up here by default.

It's a Weatherspoons! Huge pub but still manages to get very busy. Bit studenty .. though that may be good if you're a student!

Typical Weatherspoons. Don't even think of going there if it's crowded. Beer is indifferent at best...
Having said this, not bad food, Monday Club a favourite for the prices.
