This pub harks back to the late 19th century to be rebuilt for whatever reason in the 1960s, 50m south of the original site, on the edge of Queens Market, as equally Brutalist and ugly as the pub. It was on CAMRA’s list of pubs with historic interiors, but the link is now dead and removed from the What?ub page, so perhaps it has been delisted, which wouldn’t surprise me.
Once I’d been frisked by a bouncer, I entered an utterly stark interior with white walls with some grey paint for punctuation, illuminated by modern lighting. Furniture comprised some ash grey peripheral banquettes with a pool table and games machines in evidence, supported by an incredibly worn carpet; it was a bit like a prison common room but with the addition of booze and deafening [c]rap music. Customers seemed to be exclusively Afro-Caribbean, Asian or from the Levant, me regarded with some suspicion.
No real ale here of course, a half of Kronenbourg arriving at £2.40, served by an old-school landlady, the only remaining item of heritage.
This is a poor place; I’d rather live out my life in a ‘spoons than come here again, a staggering contrast to the Boleyn Tavern at the bottom of the road.

This is a very good example of its genera, open plan and roomy inside,carpeted and clean - not always the case with some estate style pubs, no real ale as expected, and a range of standard keg offerings. A couple pool tables in evidence and an electronic dart score board but I saw no evidence of a dartboard itself. The Guinness was of so I made do with a half of Kronenbourg. It was steadily populated on a Thursday afternoon, not a place for me but I'd rather spend twenty minutes in here than in a Spoons.

There's no real ale on here unfortunately. But there's a bit of retro furniture on the bar counter - a mainly plastic fronted food container, with pies and the like in it.
This is a post-war pub, which could have been built as late as 1970. There's a vestibule entrance on the Green St side, with a quarry tiled floor and a bit of an atrium with a glazed ceiling. An unused door on the left leads to an area (which is obviously also accessed from the main bar area) containing a pool table. A small area leading from the right of the vestibule contains a pool table.
The main bar area is a very simple and largely unadorned affair, which is typical of a 1970s pub. The simple bar counter with horizontal panelling, and the eleven bay mirrored bar back are original as you would expect. There's some nice - and also probably original - fixed bench seating in there, as well as a couple of banquettes and a table on a raised dais at the back. A second entrance is at the rear of the pub. One unusual thing to the right of the bar counter is a set of very small double doors signed "Engine Room"; possibly access to the cellar? It's mainly carpeted but with some bare-boarding near the bar counter.
This is exactly what it appears to be - a very unprepossessing relatively modern estate pub. To be honest it's not really my sort of place as it doesn't do real ale, but I'm delighted that it's still here for the locals to enjoy.
