Beware the pub opening times on WhatPub as on a Friday lunchtime someone was selling jewellery tat from a long table the full length of the entrance, with the pub therefore closed.May not open during market trading hours.

This technically is a historic pub dating back in some form to 1740, though probably rebuilt at some time; formerly a Whitbread house.

My first time in here the other day and on entering, the first thing you notice is just how tiny and narrow this place is - I'm not joking when I say that this pub is about the size of some of the larger pub lavatories I've used. The interior is greenish in hue and bare boarded. There's no pub décor whatsoever; to the rear is some sort of U-shaped banquette snug, at front there are small low tables whilst in the middle there are ridiculous high wall-mounted 'micro-tables' and high chairs which are so close together that two can't be used simultaneously, there are stools to the bar which runs along the interior's left side. Lighting is 'mood' and there are bulkhead lamps along one wall; chunky candles to tables are in abundance. The interior is very gloomy, not helped by the lack of natural light. There's a muted funk soundtrack on the stereo.

The bar displayed three anonymous chrome taps with no obvious signs of any ale. The friendly barman served me with a half of lager as requested, which as it happened turned out to be Peroni and at £2.50 a half...ouch!

This place was virtually empty. One thing I can say with absolute certainty is that this is now a wine/cocktail bar and is in no way a pub, so I won't be returning.

Small pub in the heart of Portobello Road market. Gets crowded on a Saturday. Sorry about the narrow angle on the photograh, had to squeeze a shot between the stalls.
