A minor entry on the CAMRA Inventory list, having been vandalised 8-odd years ago. Some nice lower tiled exterior and interior bits and bobs (mainly the intricate wood and glass divider at the bar, plus parquet floored and stained glass windowed jumbo side room) remain but otherwise not a huge amount to write home about; the wood panelling has been painted over and interior is a bit barn like in a modern style, plus there was a smell of farts (cabbage being boiled in the kitchen??). No cask, so a swift half of keg it was. Not much to recommend it, really.

Wording to the exterior indicates that this pub dates from the mid-17th century, rebuilt in 1930 in the brewers’ Tudor style for Mann, Crossman & Paulin and listed on CAMRA’s inventory of pubs with historic interiors as being of Some Regional Importance, photos of which can be seen on their site; the pub is now part of the Frontier pubs chain.
I didn’t really find the interior to be anything special, so suspect that it has been mucked about with, but the divisions between parts of the bar were of interest, the bare brick less so. Furniture was conventional as were the customers, many with dogs in tow.
A friendly barman relieved me of £2.40 for a half of the only ale on offer: London Brewing’s Beer Street which tasted not unlike cold mulled wine.
This isn’t a great pub, but it’s a showstopper compared to the Duke of York across the road, judging by its punters drinking outside. However, the incessantly barking dogs drove me out of this place, proving to me to be the final Frontier.

Despite some nice external tiling the pub looks a bit tired and tatty, the huge cavernous interior also isn't helped by the dull dark green colour scheme making it seem rather dingey. Plenty of TV screens had however brought a good few punters through the door to watch the football. There are a couple of handpumps but were unclipped and not in use on my visit, I'm not sure if this is a permanent move as there was plenty of craft Keg options available. I had a pint of Siren Suspended In Sabro, setting me back £6.00. It's a high street pub that serves a purpose but it didn't really do it for me.

The large family area was busy on our Sunday afternoon visit, so we took a left at the entrance and got some solitude at the front bar. The young barman was initially friendly and chatty and we were having a good old chat, until the manager asked him to do some bar work, which he did for a while, and then came back for another chat and a laugh. The Truman's Swift was a very good beer on handpump and I also managed to get a good few tasters of the Weird Beard Hit the Lights IPA 5.8%, from our new barman friend. The pizzas also looked very good and smelled delicious, as the pizza oven was only across from us, on the left hand side of the bar.

What a vast improvement to this dump of a pub.Amazed at how big this pub is.Nice beer garden to rear.I know they have brutalised the heritage interior but its that or flats for pubs like this. Two cask beers Sharps -atlantic and my very tasty boring brown bitter Trumans -runner.About a dozen keg beers.

They had two real ales on in here - Truman's Runner and Weird Beard Hitlights (5.8% and £2.35 a half). Food is now important here; they specialise in pizze, which are normally £8.50 to £10.50, but a much reduced £5 for any pizza weekdays between 12 noon to 3.0 PM. I had one and would say that at £5 it's very good value for money. There's a sign behind the servery listing the beers, entitled "Hello is it beer your looking for" (aargh!). That's good going - a question mark, a comma, an apostrophe, and a letter all missing from a seven word sentence.

This was my first visit since reopening after its recent refurbishment. The refurbishment here has been unsympathetic to put it mildly, as it's essentially been opened up and gutted. The changes have led to it being removed from CAMRA's National Inventory of pubs with historic interiors. I can appreciate an operator's dilemma - keep the multi-partitioned inter-war pub fittings, or strip it all out and make it a more family friendly inclusive pub and make more money. They should at least have retained the snug, which they could have done and still have made it the food led pub it is now. I would also say that if a pub operator doesn't want a pub with with rare heritage features - then don't buy one!

If one can ignore for a moment what has been done to this pub, then it's quite a friendly and welcoming place with decent beer and food.

This looks like a typical inter-war built pub to me. It still retains its multi room format, with a Public Bar on the left; a Private Bar in the Middle; and a Saloon Lounge on the right. The Saloon Lounge comprises a medium size room as you enter, with a large lounge at the rear reached through an archway, which at some point would have been separated by doors. I just had a quick peek at the Public Bar, which is exactly what you would expect in a pub like this – a slightly less salubrious version of the Saloon Bar, but with a games room at the back. I spent my visit in the Saloon Bar, which is a fairly comfortable room, being carpeted and containing banquette seating and normal tables and chairs. There is an attractive wood framed fireplace, and what looks to be original wood panelling up to the dado rail level. There were a few old photographs on the wall, mainly of this pub through the ages, a one armed bandit in the Public Bar, and TV monitors on the wall of course.
I guess this is an “Irish” bar, judging by the fact that the chap you served me, who I took to be the landlord, was Irish; there were shamrock festooned adverts for St Patrick's Day in the window advising one to come and enjoy the “craic”; and there was some writing in Gaelic above the entrance to the lounge. They normally serve Courage Best, but unfortunately it was off when I visited – something to do with Cheltenham(?) according to the barman. This is a reasonable enough pub, and it’s extremely good to see a pub like this still in its original state, but I wouldn’t visit just for the ale.
