Tris C left this review about Tropix

This dates from at least the late 19th century as the Royal Oak, though was probably rebuilt in the ‘30s, the current name applied around 2020.
The exterior looks vaguely tropical, guarded menacingly by bouncers who won’t even let you past the sash to the beer terrace, let alone grant entry to what is now a Tropical/Hawaiian/Tiki-themed cocktail bar.
I doubt that a single middle-aged man would have received much of an Aloha here, so I didn’t bother.

Has changed hands. has a brighter interior and more exotic food, like oysters. Prices reflect this. This is what it looks like now, seems to have lost a lot of character. Update, had the piped music on very loud, even the staff had to nearly shout to be heard and they were standing next to each other behind the bar. Another update: It is being refurbished again. Now calling itself a restaurant & cocktail bar.

Fifty Five at the Oak is a single room pub with a small bar on the right hand wall that faces seating up the left. There is also seating to the front and rear. I didn’t note the presence of any televisions, but there was some background music playing from the 70s/80s.
Keg offerings from Camden Town and Meantime Breweries were available alongside Blue Moon and Samuel Smith’s Boston lager. I was asked by the very friendly bar tender if I wanted a slice of orange in my Blue Moon. I’ll try most things once so I said yes and was pleasantly surprised.
The most memorable thing about his place was the mixed toilets at the rear. A row of cubicles with a larger area full of urinals to the far left. Call me old fashioned, but I’m not comfortable knowing that innocent young ladies may be witness to my daily pan cracking commotions as my body purges itself of the previous day’s gluttony.
I know some Camdenites in their early thirties who would really like this pub, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to revisit.

Alan Winfield left this review about The Royal Oak

I went in here early Saturday dinner 9 Jan 2010.This pub looks strange from the outside as all the other buildings in the row are taller, once inside it is a small one roomed pub with the bar on the right as you enter there were two real ales on the bar i had Sharpes Doom Bar which was ok but nothing special the other beer was Adnams Bitter this pub is very handy for Clapham North tube but theres nothing to shout about here.
