The Royal Oak has for me in the past been the default pre-Charlton Athletic watering hole and is naturally packed to the rafters on match days. Service is however usually very efficient given the circumstances and space can usually be found either outside on the street or in the relatively decent beer garden (a lot more presentable now than it once was).

Being about 300 yards from The Valley, the Charlton Athletic connections are obvious and there are several interesting photos, newspaper clippings and CAFC snippets although the emphasis is lost by the numerous cheap promotion posters and notices. The general décor is quite plain and the layout a bit cramped when busy. On one side of the pub is a curious wedge shaped extension and the other end of the bar is a pool table and entrance to the garden. The 3 flat screen TVs cover most of the pubs angles with Sky & ESPN both shown.

There are 6 hand pumps but only 2 ales generally available, usually Hobgoblin and Bombardier although availability can be a bit hit or miss. I have made 2 recent visits, one being on a match day, and noted that the prices were reasonable when there is no game on (a Guinness was £2.90) and quite hefty when there is (Hobgoblin was £3.60). Whilst not a like for like comparison (there were no ales on my non match day visit) I would presume that in tandom with other pubs in the area, prices are hiked up to capitalize on the crowds.

I have never witnessed anything untoward in the pub and for the most part, Charlton supporters are generally very accommodating. The pub is a bit dead on non-match days but probably still ranks among the better pubs in the area.
