A prominent Victorian boozer on Wolverton's main drag.
The inside has been completely refurbished and is now entirely open plan with a mixture of high tables and stools and standard tables and chairs but there's plenty of space between these.
It's clearly a music venue as the decor indicates alongside lists of forthcoming live acts. Many of these play upstairs but it would be relatively easy to rearrange the furniture downstairs so perhaps this happens as well.
With its dim lighting and plenty of neon it doesn't really feel pub like and Wolverton's hipsters are clearly at home here. Don't be put off by this though as the atmosphere is good and everyone we encountered very friendly.
Our visit found Hobgoblin Gold and Oakham Citra, in excellent condition, on tap.
Not necessarily one for the traditionalist but I suspect that the Citra was the best pint available in Wolverton so it gets my vote.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Dec 2012.
A fine large Victorian street corner building, these days better known for it's live music. The exterior still carries Charrington's insignia but the entrance from the carpark is dark and dingy like entering a club.Past the ticket booth, you enter a large room with a small raised stage to the right, with just a few tables and chairs to the side. There are black leather sofas and the black banquette under the main window was ripped and rickety as you might expect. The wooden fronted bar extends into a small room which must have been a corner snug but these days houses a pool table, pin ball and a giant model of a spider. The decor is mainly in black and a large Jaegermeister flag obscures some stained glass work in the front window.Interestingly bands leave a signed T shirt which is pinned to the ceiling. There is a rock juke box and a screen showing music videos.
There were two traditional handpumps and two chrome efforts ,one looking like a GK IPA north/south dispenser.Only one real ale on my trip ,Hobgoblin £3 and in decent shape.Served by a friendly barman with much body art.
There is an open mic every Wednesday, and regular pay at the door live music nights starting a 9pm and the ones I saw advertised were between £3 and £8 .The pub also hosts quizes.Heating was provided by way of a warm air blower, only necessary when no band is on ,but the interior does have that sweaty student aroma.
To one side of the building there is a seperate lounge with it's own entrance and bar but this is let seperately and was the venue for a slimming club on my visit. Also the the side of the stage there is a curtained off section as well,so you get clues to the original commercial hotel layout.
I would say this is probably a good live music venue if that's your bag,as a pub it has it's limitations but is worth a visit to see the "gothic" interior decor.

UPDATE
Without altering the layout,a refurb has smartened up the interior, although it's still very much a music pub.The bar now sports more handpumps with a choice on my latest visit of Hobgoblin Gold and a very good Oakham Citra.High tables have replaced worn sofas, there is more seating on the dog leg side, and bands will tend to play upstairs ,where you can carry your drinks from the bar,but in plastic containers.Probably the best real ale in Wolverton ,but the bar is set low in this down at heel town.
