Definitely a pub compared to the many gastro pubs in the area but no real ale.

Another first into a pub which I’ve passed all my life – when I was a small boy my mother used to take us to the street market in Queen’s Crescent, an area which now has a substantial Islamic community, unable to patronise pubs for obvious reasons.
This is now the only boozer in the immediate vicinity, the Malden Arms, Dreghorn Castle, Queen’s Arms, Mamelon Tower, Crown, Harmood Arms, Prince of Wales and Carlton, all having closed over the last 20-odd years. An avowedly locals’ pub, this is a fairly large mid-Victorian corner edifice with some basic partitions and a pool table to the rear; there’s also a dartboard. Grey paint punctuations are an obvious attempt to mirror a typically more upmarket gastropub which this isn’t – I don’t even know if they sell any kind of food. The bar’s quite long and is situated to the rear. Furniture is modern conventional and the floor is part bare boarded, part carpeted with an attractive fireplace to the rear, sadly unused on this freezing night. To the walls there are some period prints. Music played and a bit too loudly to be comfortable, despite not having to compete with the TVs showing the news with the sound off. Clients are typically a generation older than me, dashing swain that I am; a symphony of leather and silk.
Ales: we were quite ‘researched’ at this point in the evening and I didn’t spot the apparent Caledonian’s Deuchars at all, but there was a tap dispensing John Smith’s Extra Smooth which is crap, or so I’m told. I opted for a half of Foster’s at £1.90 which is £1.90 too much in my opinion but would probably be more expensive elsewhere.
This really isn’t a great pub and I feel sorry for the locals as anything else vaguely near here is expensive and populated by Beautiful People a lot younger than me, so I wish the Peel well, but I won’t be returning.

The Sir Robert Peel is a corner pub that is situated at one end of the Queens Crescent market and shopping area, just the sort of streets i like to do pubs on.
Once inside there is an oblong shaped room which runs the width of the pub,the bar faces on entry, the floor is part carpeted and bare boarded, there is comfy bench seating and chairs and some normal tables and chairs.
There were TVs which were showing horse racing and there was a pool table to the left.
There was one real ale on the bar which was Deuchars IPA,this was a decent drink.
The background music was irish which i do not like.
The pub was fairly busy with locals on my Friday afternoon visit.
I had to wait a while to get to this pub has a massive storm broke out when i was at the wrong end of Queens Crescent.
I quite liked this pub.

This is an open plan L-shaped corner pub that I hadn’t been to for some years until last weekend and although there is nothing special about the change in decor I thought that the atmosphere was much improved since my last visit. I called in early on Saturday evening as a band was setting up in the corner where a pool table is usually available to play and whilst I was supping a very nice pint of Guinness I noticed an advertisement stating that there is live music every Saturday night. Along with standard draught products and San Miguel there are also two hand pumps which were unfortunately both drawing Greene King IPA. There are a couple of plasma screens which were both muted to allow for some background music, but this pub does have Sky Sports for showing the football when it is on.

I wouldn’t make this a destination pub, but the friendly service and relaxed atmosphere that I encountered will have me popping back in for a pint or two when next passing.
