Real Ale Ray left this review about The Three Johns

I found the bar staff in here to be hip and upbeat. They all had good knowledge about the drinks they were serving, from a cask ale to Gins or Bourbons. The pub was very busy on our Friday eve visit, with the majority of their customers drinking al fresco, along the main and side streets.
The inside was also quite busy, so we sat at the bar for speedy refreshment. The pub had lots of windows along each side, all of which opened to create a good breeze flowing in. Three handpumps, so we went for the Northern Monk True North, which was in excellent shape.

A polished boarded floor type place as is becoming the norm, the bar along the back wall, distressed panelling, lots of exposed brick walls, a patterned squared copper ceiling. There are various portraits, framed yet defiled by stupid add ons like eggs and the like faced over. I didn't get these at all.
Exposed beams and columns, the bar counter is copper topped. Clear glass windows, seating at slatted wood benches that reminded me of childhood bus seats plus old church chairs, flowers in old beer bottles.
Three handpumps, Mordue Workie Ticket, Harviestown Rasp Engine (10.5%)!, I commented on the strength of this and the friendly barmaid said you can get hammered on a pint and a half......lightweight then, plus local Hammerton N.1 Pale Ale. Thirds served. Huge bottled range and a large range of bourbons and whiskies. Food served, big on pizzas oddly also serving dessert versions.
A nice pub doing the right things but I didn't get the artwork.

Pub SignMan left this review about The Three Johns

This pub has variously been known as Jay Cubed, Hobgoblin and Fallen Angel in recent years, before reverting back to its original name in May 2014, having been taken over by the same people behind the likes of the Well and Bucket in Shoreditch and Harrild and Son's near Fleet Street. The pub has an extremely basic two room interior. You enter into the large, bare boarded main bar with the servery down one side and standard tables, chairs and hard fixed benches around the perimeter. This leaves a huge open space in between - great for vertical drinkers during busier moments, but a strange void space when quieter. A couple of quirky large art prints similar to those found in other branches of this chain, adorn the walls, as does a large painted pub advertisement sign. At the far end there is a door through to a much smaller second room which has black padded banquettes around the perimeter, supplemented by some old church/school chairs. Large candelabra style light fixtures can be seen around the walls, along with one more of their signature portraits. Rather tatty looking wood panelling with bare brick above give the place a traditional, if rather neglected, look which is further enhanced by an attractive square panelled ceiling which can be seen in both rooms, although the smaller room also has a skylight. Every table had a beer bottle on it, full of colourful flowers, which brightened the place up a bit, whilst a 50's music soundtrack played throughout my visit.
There were three handpulled beers at the bar - Magic Rock Retrospect, Liverpool Craft Toast and Northern Monk Monacus NZ. Keg options included the likes of Roosters, Northern Monk, Camden, Aspatch & Hobday, Tiny Rebel and Rouge. This was further complimented by a strong bottled range and my pint of the Retrospect was in pretty good shape. A pizza menu is available, with most (including dessert pizzas) coming in at around £8-9.
I thought this was a strange pub, with a unusual combination of traditional pub décor crossed with drinking barn layout. The good beer options would certainly tempt me back but I'd hope to arrive at a busier time, as the atmosphere felt a bit flat with all that empty space.

Moby Duck left this review about The Three Johns

Large and slightly barn like inside with lots of intentionally distressed paint work and furniture as well as exposed brickwork with the aforementioned weird portraits, the pub is linked to the Well and Bucket on Bethnal Green Road. Three beers on, my Tiny Rebel Beat Box was good. The young girl serving had an impressive knowledge of what she was selling as did the barman, both very welcoming.I liked this pub very much.

Now reverted back to the Three johns.Craft beer bar.Large high ceilinged open plan with exposed brickwork and weird portraits on the walls.Bit too cold and impersonal for me .Three real ales on inc Hackney -apa and Liverpool craft-American red.Nice modern style pub overall.Ten or more keg options.

Steve C left this review about Hobgoblin

The Hobgoblin is a large open plan pub with a leaning towards music with DJs playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and regular live music. I visited on Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and the genre was jazz and blues that seemed to be going down better with the DJ than most of the other customers which probably explained why it wasn’t that busy. When football is on it is shown on the projector screen and plasmas that are dotted about and can be seen from most of the sofas and more conventional seating that is found throughout. There is also a room at the rear that houses a pool table. I found the staff to be friendly and the Guinness was well served. More standard draught is also available alongside some premium lagers and Hobgoblin is available from the hand pump.

This place used to be called Jay Cubed but changed its name to Hobgoblin circa 2007.

This is not really my scene so I doubt that I’ll return.
