Basically nowt has changed here in the last two-and-a-half years, sadly including the paint pots but at least the place has been looked-after. Ales on all McMullens - AK, IPA, Country and a good nick (but fairly boring) Red Hart. Visiting during the daylight hours meant I got to sample the suntrap front decking with olive trees and a view of the wheezing 800 bus service crawling down the main road. Still just about a 7.

January 2013
A striking, recently-refurbished McMullens pub, sat in a field with the word ‘BRITANNIA’ beaming out in ultra-large large illuminated letters towards Bourne End Road, executed in a rather pleasing Art Deco style. The frontage of the pub has basically been smacked in and replaced with a wood and plate glass combination with some space-age covered drinking areas on the patio. The interior has a number of glass partitions and looks ultra-modern but actually has a bit of character. Not sure if the shelves stacked with used paint pots were left-overs from the refurbishment or some ball-achingly awful piece of ‘art’; hopefully the former. There’s supposedly a nautical theme and some of the furniture looked a bit like flotsam and jetsam which seemed incongruous with the ultra-modern glass and chrome fittings. Four of the McMullens range were on and the two I had were in decent shape, if – as seems usual for their beers – a tad dull. Food is pushed here though I don’t think that it was beyond Brake Bros standard from what I could observe. Overall I rather liked this one as something different and would pop in again; I imagine it’d be a hit in the summer months. Rated 7
