I last came here in the late 1980s and recall a Victorian bedpan fixed to a wall.
A return visit the other night, due to the place being on CAMRA's list of heritage interiors, being of Some Regional Interest.
It's a Greene King central London pub, so naturally there's an A-board outside advertising fish 'n' chips to the inevitable tourists. The heritage elements relate to the bar back, etched console brackets and some cut glass panels. Otherwise it has a modern herringbone floor with a black and white tiled bar apron. Walls are part wainscoting dark smoky blue with some field panelling up to a white ceiling with egg and dart cornice. Illumination comes from fake brass and cut glass Victoriana. Furniture is conventional split roughly 50/50 between high and low. The pub is big on TVs which no one was watching and quite loud music; a games machine flashed in the corner and graffiti is rife in the loo.
Ales: one unclipped pump, Landlord, Abbot, GK IPA and Truman's Zephyr at an unsurprising £2.60 a half and good.
This is by no means a great pub and though no masterpiece, the Hereford Arms next door is a better bet and a lot cheaper too.

Solid and bustling pub opposite Gloucester Road tube station, popular with tourists for food. Reasonable range of beers for Greene King, with Landlord and Sambrook's Pale alongside Abbot, IPA and London's Glory. A quick pit stop rather than somewhere you would linger.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Stanhope Arms

High ceilings and presumably a rather transient customer base (being very close to Gloucester Road station) give this place a somewhat cold atmosphere. However, there is a reasonable amount of interest in the façade and interior decor of this Taylor Walker outlet. The 'L'-shaped bar is also a reasonable size but it can feel pretty cramped unless you manage to get a seat in the main corner area. The beer is generally well kept, with the four handpumps offering Youngs London Gold, Bombardier, Pride and Hobgoblin (£3.95) on my latest visit.

So Mr. Nick Davis... You talk about bog-standard pubs... That's funy 'cause of your bog-standard comments. Everyone is the same, only the names may change...

To the pub: In my opinion it is one of the best pubs I've been to. The food is awesome (try the Big Ben Burger!) They have the essential ales and for the none-beer-lovers a cider (Strongbow). In addition many other drinks.
The furniture is ok and I like the carpet. That is my opinion, but I really prefer walking on a carpet. That warms the atmosphere for me.

The service guys are really nice and it is almost impossible to dislike 'em (almost because 'impossible is nothing').

There may be one downside: The tourists. And in addition there is a language school close to there, so in the noon you may have meny students a majority from italy and spain. So it depends on the visior... If you like to have it international, it a plus. But for me it is rather a downside. But you have this all over the rather centre of London.

Almost indistinguishable from the Gloucester up the road this is a bog standard Punch "City Metro" format pub. It hasn't changed much over the years though sadly lost its superb spit and sawdust public bar long ago. Its main function nowadays to to provide the vast number of package tourists who stay in the many local hotels with the Genuine Olde English Pub Experience which I guess it does, sort of. Lots of wood panelling, far too much furniture to eat Traditional English Fish And Chips from and some of those horrid high tables, but decidedly pubby, no attempts at gastrification here. Right by the station so the obvious choice for Circle Line pub crawlers

Usual Punch suspects on the handpumps, Pride, Young's Ordinary, a couple of others.

This pub is ideally located for a quick pint before braving the tube system. The Pride was good and Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire were also available alongside Hoegarden, Staropramen and some standard lagers. The staff seemed ok although they were more interested in getting the food orders out.

There is a plasma screen, but I saw no sports advertised and the pub has an over 21s policy which I'd imagine kicks in during the evening as there were young kids in with families during my visit.

It's not the most exciting of pubs and I wouldn't go out of my way to drink here again.
