One of the best pubs in the Wycombe surrounds and a former Camra branch pub of the year, this pub is pretty much in the sticks; up the hill from Wooburn Green and near to the kiddie-friendly Odds Farm. A classic country boozer, which was heaving on our Saturday lunchtime visit – busy with diners tucking into home-cooked pub grub, and busy with people enjoying a quiet pint or two, both inside and out (the 'Ozzy style shack' referred to in Steve's 2010 review). A number of ales and real ciders on offer: I opted for a local in Stardust's Just Stout, which was a gorgeous creamy and roasty stout, served by a friendly and efficient landlady, who mixed her time between serving at the bar and ferrying plates from the kitchen to expectant diners. A cosy ambience too means I have to concur with Blue Scrumpy that I too should really try and get here more often.

I hadn't been to the Royal Standard since spring 2013, despite vowing last time to visit more often.
My last visit over 7 years ago was during a beer festival. This visit was in very different circumstances, amidst the government's campaign against alcohol and the hospitality industry in full flow, this being the penultimate day before the latest prohibition period in the south east of England.
The atmosphere was fairly sombre, given the circumstances. But all tables were taken with people enjoying drinks along with their mandatory substantial meal.
The beer range was good, as the owners (like most) had not been expecting to be told the day before that they would have to close again. Timothy Taylor Landlord was on. This appears to be the one regular beer. Guests were Oakham Inferno & Green Devil, Otter Bitter & St Austell Proper Job. Ciders were Weston's Old Banger & Shottle Farm Grumpy Farmer.
We sat in the bar area. There is also more of a dining area on a slightly lower level than the rest of the pub. A few hardy souls were braving the winter evening weather at the rear of the pub, in an undercover area which did admittedly have some kind of heaters.
My substantial meal was a full rack of ribs, which thankfully took a fair while to eat. I didn't want it to get in the way of drinking. The ribs, accompanied by chips and coleslaw, were very enjoyable indeed.
The two guys working were rushed off their feet. But they were very friendly and professional.
As a pub relatively close to us, I really must make a concerted effort to visit here more regularly.

The Royal Standard has been a long standing flagship for real ale in South Bucks. There are regularly 10 ales available, five dispensed from the hand pumps on the bar and the other 5 on gravity from barrels out the back. The pumps are double clipped so that you can see all that is available.
A couple of the hand pumped beers are regular, such as Deuchars IPA and Hop Back Summer lightning, but then the gravity beers are regularly changing with always a fair representation from regional brewers. For example Holdens XB, Jennings Cumberland Ale, St Austells Tribute and Guardsman from the recently opened Windsor and Eton Brewery were on during my most recent visit this week.
The pub also holds beer festivals a couple of times a year (usually in Spring and Autumn) when up to 50 beers are available.
There is also usually an extensive food menu ranging from bar snacks to full meals and the couple of times I have eaten here the quality has been very good.
Internally its one open room subdivided into three distinct sections and the decor is that befitting a fine traditional country village pub. But then that brings us to one of the very few draw backs of the Royal Standard, in that it’s not near any village but stuck in the middle of nowhere, on a fairly busy road a couple of miles from Burnham Beeches and next to Odds Farm Park rare breeds centre. This means that the only way to visit is by car, and although it now has an extended car park, this still gets full quite quickly on most evenings.
And the other slight negative is that there is no garden. But there are outside tables to the front which butt onto the busy road, and then the Ozzy style shack bolted onto the side of the pub, as mentioned below, which is equipped with comfy chairs and tables and heaters, and although primarily provided for smokers, is still a great place to sup a pint even if you’re not.
But don’t get me wrong, these negatives are just small gripes, and if you could get to The Standard by public transport so that you could enjoy the beer without worrying about your car, this would almost be the perfect pub.

Situated on a fairly busy road, the Royal Standard is nonetheless almost in the middle of nowhere, with few (if any) surrounding dwellings. Nonetheless it manages to pack in ten ales, five of which are on handpump, whilst the other five are at the rear on stillage – the pumps are double-clipped so you can easily see the full selection whilst standing at the bar. Deuchars IPA and Hop Back Summer Lightning appear to regular, with the rest as guests. Beer condition is usually pretty good although I have had the odd duff one. The interior is a long, fairly narrow room subdivided into three areas; fairly unremarkable. Food is offered though I’ve never sampled. There’s no garden to speak of just some picnic tables out the front, feet away from the main road.
If you like your beer, this one worth seeking out, so long as somebody else is driving you.

This is a real pub, lost count of the number of real ales, 2 per pump (possibly 8 in total) with another row on the back shelf ... food is incredible too. Smoking area is a heated Ozzy style shack with comfy chairs and friendly chat. Best in the area in my humble opinion.
