I came here twice before on dates: once in 1988, then again in 1999, when this was still the Orange Brewery and I discovered Porter, brewed onsite, naturally. Now it's Doom, Hammerton's N1 and Five Points XPA, good, though £6.00 a pint.
Sadly, all the wonderful rich Victorian brown wood has been ripped out in favour of a bland palate of pale woods, steel and wood bar back, with pizza oven to the rear and rag washed vanilla-coloured walls and ceiling. The left bar features a snug of sorts to the rear, with drinking ledges and plastic wicker stools located to the front. Given that a sign above the snug informed the reader that accommodation and dining were upstairs, I naturally thought that the right/rear room was a lounge and informal dining, given that although there were several diners and tables laid with cutlery and glasses, there were some empty, unlaid tables at which I attempted to sit. A waitress arrived and said: ‘Are you for real? What do you think you’re doing?’ I told her that I’d quite like to sit down for a drink, to which she responded that this was the dining area, the bar area being from where I’d come. I retreated to my drinking ledge, to note that there was no mention whatsoever, that no one was to enter the dining room under pain of death; how many more diners were they expecting at 9.30 on a Sunday evening? And is this little bitch always so rude to customers?
This is a terrible stuck-up place – avoid.

The earlier review is still pretty spot on, except possibly less than generous with the rating. Apart from the pricing, which sadly is not uncommon in the area, not too unpleasant although the loss of old features is regrettable. The Adnam's ale changes seasonally and the food is actually very good.

This pub is lucky enough to be housed in an early Victorian building which is now Grade II listed. It was once the “Orange Brewery” brewpub. But now it’s been stripped of all its Victorian features, and brewing here is now a thing of the past. Now it’s a gastropub, with prices that are expensive even by London gastropub prices. There were three ales on Adnam’s Topaz (£4 a pint); Deuchars IPA, and Harvey’s Bitter (£4.20 a pint). The Sunday roast beef was somewhere between £19 and £20.
The furnishings are what you expect from a gastropub – modern replacement boarded floors, solid wooden tables, etc, etc. Nonetheless, the majority of the seating was available for use by drinkers, although the room on the right looked as if it was ntended for diners. I would recommend this pub to anyone who likes expensive gastropubs.

The Orange Public House and Restaurant was unsurprisingly busy with diners when I visited around 13:00 on Thursday last week. This is a gastro pub at the higher end of the scale where one gets seated upon entry. The food looked and smelt good, but the mains start at £14.50 so I would expect little else. There are three hand pumps on the bar that were drawing Adnams Southwold, Deuchars and Harveys Best and there is also a selection of premium draught products. I didn’t spot a TV, but there was some lively jazz playing in the background. The interior is U shaped and the furnishings are made of light sanded down wood giving a very fresh feel. There is some café style seating on the path down the side of the pub and rooms are available for around £200 per night.
I’m not someone who lunches so I doubt that I’ll ever return here, but I can see the attraction as it is a friendly place and I wasn’t once made to feel unwelcome because I was just having a beer.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Orange
Modernised gastro-pub, which also has a small number of 'boutique' hotel rooms (at a price). The room containing the bar is fairly small (with a bit more seating in the small side room), but the larger side room has tables set for diners so it can be difficult to find a space unless the weather is good (in which case you will find many of the customers outside). However, there is also a limited amount of seating downstairs. Four handpumps, three of which were in use (offering Deuchars IPA, Adnams and a reasonable pint of Harveys at a hefty £3.75). Unlikely to be to everybody's taste (and the prices on the wine list will make your eyes water), it is probably a bit better than initial impressions suggest.
