The former name cited below, arises from it being a former Firkin pub, just off Chelsea Creek and formerly a Watney’s house, called the Balloon Tavern, which featured in the film A Deadly Affair, visible as such on Reelstreets.
Nowadays, this is a rather bland development, with a power station chimney looming over it, pretty much in the middle of nowhere and not easily accessible either. The interior has been completely gastrofied, with a modern floor, high metal topped bar, scaffold bar back with open kitchen, tall table ledges to windows with more scaffold, some conventional furniture, grey and white three-quarter height panelling and a lemon-yellow ceiling; at least the inset mirrored panels might be original. Acoustics in here are poor, due to all the hard surfaces and with a fairy large, mixed crowd, made for quite a din, along with the overly premature and tedious for decades Christmas soundtrack.
Two unused pumps flanked one dispensing Portobello’s Ho Ho Ho, a seasonal beer – you don’t say – which was quite decent, but with a half setting me back £2.60.
In all, this place is a bit stark. If marooned out in this backwater, the Chelsea Ram is a far better and more traditional alternative.

This was once part of the Ferret & Firkin chain and I was last here sometime in the 90's when it was the wonderfully named The Ferret & Firkin in a Balloon up the Creek. But today it’s hard to avoid the fact that this is another Chelsea establishment that tries to looks a bit like a pub, but is really a gastro restaurant catering to the moneyed types who inhabit this bit of London. However I quite liked this one as they have embraced the current Craft Ale trend and there are a lot of decent drinking options here.
The last make over in the Gastro direction was in October 2014 I believe and the circular exterior is now what Farrow and Ball will have down as Dark Olive Green and internally its nothing you haven’t seen before in innumerable other Gastro pubs. The main bar area is an open plan wooden floored space with various styles of wooden tables and chairs including some nice rectangular tables with wooden bench seating. And then a separate lounge section with leather bench seating with cushioned backs. The décor throughout is the usual pastel shades with the olive green theme continued internally on the half tiered walls and the bar front and then a more luminous yellow ceiling above. The old serving bar is long gone, to be replaced with the usual modern metal toped surface and metal shelving behind the bar. But the reason I warmed to this one is because the long metal bar top on the section that faces you as you enter supports in excess of 10 keg pumps and four real ale pumps.
The Keg taps were dispensing various London craft options including a couple from Meantime, Camden Town including the excellent Milk Stout, Redchurch and Weird Beard Breweries as well as the usual Brewdog offering. Three of the four ale pumps were on the go and Sambrook’s Junction, Wild Goose Purity and London Fields LovenotWar were on and the couple we tried were in good nick. And then the craft beer offerings were extended with a decent bottle and can collection on the metal shelving and the bottle fridges behind the bar.
Can’t comment on the food but a few people were in eating and this is the type of place where your burgers are served on lumps of wood with the accompanying chips and salad in aluminium pots.
I will definitely return to this pub, because the great thing is, it’s only 50 meters from the 606 Club, so a very convenient spot to fill up on decent beer before heading off to the limited beer offerings in the Jazz club.

A very busy pub/bar. Light grey painted walls inside. Food is cooked behind the bar, so you can see them make your lunch. Real ale on sale, though can't remember what they were. Friendly staff. Not sure about this, but as food is actually being prepared in the bar area, are they allowed to let dogs in? Will give them the benefit of the doubt and rate accordingly.
