Young's pub with five hand pumps with nothing above 4.5% ABV. Nice open fire to left hand rear of the place.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Marquess Of Anglesey

Rather over-refurbished Youngs pub of no particular interest decor-wise, located just far enough away from the heart of Covent Garden to avoid the worst of the crowds but inevitably having a transient feel. 'L'-shaped bar with 'Bistro' dining area upstairs. Two banks of four handpumps on the counter, usually with a standard selection from the Wells & Youngs range e.g. Ordinary, Special and Bombardier plus a seasonal and/or a guest (Youngs Blonde on my latest visit). Overall, hardly memorable, but the bar staff are efficient and the beer quality good.

A street corner pub just off of Covent Garden, it has a traditional appearance from the outside but looks as though it has had a bit of a makeover at some point and has a somewhat more contemporary interior to that which one finds in many London pubs.

Being a corner plot it has dual aspect windows and there were wooden boards on the floor along with predominantly cream paintwork. White butcher’s tiles clad parts of the walls and many of the pillars and unusually some of these had a small leather cushion affixed to them at waist height so you could half lean/half sit against them. The obligatory old black and white photographs of the Covent Garden market adorned the walls whilst there was a small bookcase in one corner. A small plasma was mounted up above the door, but this was not in use on our visit. There is also an upstairs dining area although we did not investigate this.

Beers on tap were all from the Young’s stable with their Bitter, Special, Winter Warmer and Bombardier. The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk. Prices seemed expensive even for central London with a pint and a half coming in at £7.40.

According to the blurb there has been a pub here since 1682. Until 1908 it was run as 2 different enterprises, Edward Miles Coffee House situated on the corner plot and the pub next door before they were merged together to the Marquis of Anglesey we see today. The separate buildings are still evident from the remaining wall remnants.

These days the pub has undergone a modern makeover and appears to be aimed at a slightly more upmarket customer base but it does come over as a bit pseudo trendy. The décor is quite bit plain and dull and the furnishings try to create a loungey feel but the place doesn’t convey any sense of being particularly relaxed or comfortable. There is an upstairs bistro which appears to be a little more elegant and has its own bar.

There were 5 ales doubled up across 10 hand pumps, 4 from the Wells/Youngs range (Ordinary, Special, London Gold and Bombardier) and a guest beer (Bath Summer Hare on my latest visit). Prices are, and always have been, very high even for this tourist hotspot with the Ordinary at £3.45 and the guest beer £3.75. Food is also quite expensive with basic main courses around £10-£15.

Being Covent Garden it naturally gets quite busy although I can’t help feel that the majority of customers are there for convenience rather than choice and with so many pubs on its doorstep I find it hard to muster up too much enthusiasm to use the place more than sporadically.

To be honest I don't like the interior decor of this pub - I think it's cheap, tacky and over-reminiscent of the 1970's. We managed to get a table (late afternoon) but it does tend to get dreadfully busy with theatre-goers in the evening. The food is pretty standard pub grub and the beers were pretty nondescript as I recall (mind you, I'd had a fair few pints by this stage of our crawl!)

Quite a big pub as it goes, popped in just on opening for a refresher. Manager pleasant enough for a central London pub. Pricewise not too extreme, have to say the Youngs London Gold was brill. Also on handpump Youngs Special, Youngs bitter and Wells Bombardier. Will pop in again early doors though as I imagine place gets very busy.

I usually avoid this pub as I’ve found the staff to be rude and the quality of beer to be suspect. By chance I spent an evening in here recently and I'd happily like to report that there has been a vast improvement in the attitude of the staff. They were efficient and friendly and served a good pint of ale putting this pub back on my Covent Garden radar.

There has been a refurbishment meaning that this may not be one for traditional pub lovers, but I liked it.

This is typical of a number of Young’s pubs these days – sofas, low tables, very clean and clinical. It’s not much like the pub I used to know back in the 70s when it was a bastion of real ale facing the onslaught of keg beer. It was also quite smaller then, before it bought up, and expanded into, the premises next door. Any real character it had has been lost over the years. And Young’s Special for over £3 a pint is pretty expensive, even by London standards. But I’ve no doubt that there are people who like this sort of place, in which case good for you – but it’s not for me!
