A good solid West End pub which suffers a bit from the huge popularity of the area but is ok at quiet times. The main room is downstairs, with a dining room upstairs, all in good traditional style. Draught ales were Doom Bar, Atlantic, Landlord, Twickenham Grandstand and something unreadable from London Brewing.

Located in the same street as Neal’s Yard Dairy, this was a first in here the other night.
The pub dates back to at least the mid-19th century but is early Edwardian, being rebuilt in 1904. The first thing you notice are the rare Meux’s and Reid’s ceramic cartouches to the ground floor. Inside, the bar’s to the rear and it’s a bit wooden but how original I don’t know, but I don’t think it dates back to 1904. Furniture is mixed, the crowd young and the music a little loud.
Ales: the awful Sharp’s Doom Bar and Atlantic, Fuller’s London Pride, Twickenham’s Naked Ladies, Sambrook’s Wandle and Southwark Brewing Co’s London Pale Ale at a very agreeable £2.30 a half and very good it was too.
As far as CG goes, this is one of the better pubs and I’d have no real reservations about making a return visit.

The Crown and Anchor was quieter than its peers late on Saturday afternoon, which was good as I was able to find somewhere comfortable to stand. Available from the bar on the rear wall were three mainstream ales alongside a standard keg range and San Miguel. The weather was clement so I was going to join the crowd who had gathered on the path out the front, but the friendly barmaid informed me that this would mean drinking out of a plastic vessel - No thanks.
As pubs go I found this one to be fairly unremarkable so I wouldn’t make a special trip to visit again.

Well lit pub but not a patch on the Cross Keys round the corner. A huge increase in the price of ale and food. The Hobgoblin tasted OK, though.

There were four ales on hand pump, so I settled for a pint of London Gold, which was spot on. The bar staff were welcoming and pleasant, even though the pub was busy. We decided to head upstairs were we encountered a large room with some of the walls papered and some exposed brick, also there was a fire place at one end. The corner bay sash windows were the feature here.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Crown & Anchor

Not sure how I have managed to avoid going into this pub before, but I have previously noted some of the interesting architectural features (e.g. the corner windows above the main door and some traditional signage) when walking past. Inside, the wood panelling in the main bar was rather lighter than I expected, but the upstairs 'Crown Bar' is decorated in a more traditional darker style. The layout makes the bar a bit tricky to reach when the place is crowded, and I think there is a modern-style Greene King IPA dispenser at the right-hand end in addition to the three handpumps offering Harveys, Deuchars IPA and Spitfire (reasonably priced for the area at £3.10).

A decent enough, but nothing special corner pub on the cobbled back streets just of Shelton Street in Covent Garden.
Built in 1904 it has a bit of a late Victorian feel going on with the interior and there is some nice external plaster work with Watneys Pimlico Ales and Reids Stout in plaster on the external walls.
Internally though, the street level bar is a fairly plain wooden floored drinking area, although there is a more comfortable upstairs room which is used as a restaurant during the day and as a bar in the evening.
The pub has no official outside drinking area, but in summer the cobbled pavements are utilised and it’s a fairly decent place for an outside pint.
Three handpumps and the usual beers are Harveys Sussex Best, Deuchars IPA, and Spitfire, as they were on my visit last week.

They had Pedigree, Spitfire and Harvey's Bitter on. The Harveys was £3 a pint, and tasted OK. This is a small corner pub on bustling Neal St, and which I found to be clean and comfortable. It's bare-boarded throughout, and has one large flatscreen TV, but which was not on when I visited early lunchtime on Wednesday. It's quite nicely decorated, with some shelving between the main room and stairs cluttered with miscellaneous nick-knacks. I didn't eat there, but the menu looked reasonably priced and unpretentious. This is a decent enough pub without being anything special.
