This pub underwent a major overhaul in June 2017 now boasting 6 letting rooms. The separate function room formerly known as the Sun and Moon is now known as Holly Tree Tots Café and serves as a standalone café for parents and toddlers. The pub was purchased from Batemans and as such is now free of tie, allowing a range of real ales to be served (currently all £3.25). A full menu is available from 12 until 9pm; rare for a pub in this area to serve right through the day. Snacks and lighter bites dominate the lunchtime menus and in the evening, several game dishes sit proudly amongst more traditional pub favourites.
The pub remains child friendly, and dog friendly, the latter enjoying their own cask full of water just outside the pub, which dispenses into a large dog bowl

The railway line and nearby station closed around 1970,yet this pub has found a new market among the holidaymakers to the many caravans and mobile homes which gather alongside the River Witham,a few boaters also pop in.
The interior is essentially an open plan lounge with ,to the left of the entrance a pool table and flat screen terrestrial TV while to the right is a long banquette, more seating and the space where a darts board once hung. The wooden glad bar is directly infront of the entrance and as this is a Bateman's tied house it's two handpumps were offering XB and XXXB (£3.15) in as good condition as is possible from these slightly sweet and malty old school brown beers.
After 37 years the present landlady is bowing out ,which meant that no food was being served on our trip. There will be some change no doubt, but I hope the polite and helpful level of service from behind the bar can be maintained by the new tenants. There is a seperate function suite in a building next to the pub which is known as The Sun and The Moon and there are three letting rooms. The pub seemed well used despite it's basic nature.

Currently there isn't much reason to visit the Railway as food isn't being served and the two handpumps serve only Batemans XXXB and XB. Both of these were well kept but it isn't the place to come for a wide ale choice.
Having said that, if you are passing this is very friendly and homely place to stop with a warm welcome, pub dog and friendly nod from the locals.
All a function of the current incumbents heading towards retirement. Time will tell how the Railway changes but with a Batemans tie and popularity amongst the locals, probably not much is the answer.
