A very respectable Inn with some enchanting history, quite pricy compared to other pubs in the centre of town. Four handpumps with three on, serving Nene Valley Blonde Session Ale, Grainstore Ten Fifty and Rutland Panther. My Ten Fifty was in excellent condition, you would expect it to be for £5.50 a pint

GBG listed and with a nice enough multi room interior with exposed stone, dark beams and portraits of four members of a 17th century gentlemen’s drinking club believed to have met here, six more portraits hang at Burghley House. Founded in 1684 by the 5th Earl of Exeter of nearby Burghley House, it was known as the Order of Little Bedlam or just the Bedlam Club. No sign of raucous drinking in that style here on my visit but the four pulls offering three Nene Valley and one Grainstore beer combined with a comfortable feel made up for the lack of excitement.

The building itself is on the main road from the south into Stamford and dates back to the late 1500's originally although there have clearly been many later additions. It really is a pub cum restaurant cum hotel and the area to the left of the drive is the designated restaurant area. To the right is the bar and although not an out and out boozer this is certainly a comfortable place to enjoy a pint or two.
The menu is comprehensive but not cheap with mains around the £15 mark. I ate breakfast here, which was very good, but can't comment on lunchtime or evening meals.
The staff are young, helpful, friendly and knowledgable on beer which makes this a welcoming place.
Beers on were: Grainstore GB Best and Cooking, Nene Valley BSA (Blonde Session Ale) and Star Brewing's Meteor. These breweries are all local based in Oakham, Oundle and Market Deeping respectively and the BSA was in good nick and whistled down on a hot day.
Worth nipping into if you're in Stamford and fancy a locally brewed ale in a nicely done historic building.

This has undergone an extensive refurbishment and re-opened about six months ago. I didn’t go in here previously so cannot make a direct comparison, but I understand it was pretty poor. Now with it’s makeover it feels like a cross between a pub and a hotel lounge, perhaps unsurprisingly as they also have rooms available. Whilst it might not have that traditional pub feel, it’s nonetheless a pleasant enough place.
The two doors in to the establishment are either side of a small drive that leads to a car park at the rear. To the left is the restaurant area, with the main bar area being to the right. This is divided in to three sections, with laminate wood flooring and a rug or two, some exposed stone walls and a few beams on the ceiling. There were a couple of fireplaces in two of the bars, although whether these are in use or not I am not sure. Each table had a candle burning away which added a sort of homely ambience. There is also a pleasant looking patio area at the rear. Bar staff seemed helpful and efficient.
There was an extensive menu covering platters to share, sandwiches, etc. as well as your usual starters and mains. It wasn’t your usual pub grub with no sign of a chilli or lasagne, although there was fish and chips. Other than that it was slightly more adventurous dishes, but nothing too pretentious. There was also a few specials chalked up on a board, with a disturbingly lifelike mannequin sat reading a book right next to one of them. My linguine with pesto, pine nuts, parmesan and rocket was a decent enough dish, although it was a little heavy on the rocket. There were also a few scotch eggs at the end of the bar. The A-board outside advertising a burger and a pint deal for £10 didn’t strike me as a particularly enticing offer.
Beers on tap were Adnam’s Bitter, Oakham JHB, Bull (brewed by Molson Coors, not sure if that’s exclusive to them) and Rupert’s War Dog from Ufford Ales. The solitary cider was Stowford Press.

This pub is Punch owned I believe and I didn’t get to see inside as looking through the window the bar was in darkness, and I presumed it to be closed. Was in a rush now and didn't see opening times. I have heard there is a free of tie arrangement there so they hope to get LocAles shortly.
