UPDATE
A makeover since my last visit, this has been taken over by the former team at The Chandos Arms in Weston Turville and there's now a microbrewery on site producing their own ales (Willy's Brews) of which there were none available on my visit. However, beer miles were good with two from the nearby (Rabans Lane) Hillfire Brewery - Rob's Bitter and Lakewood Pale - the Rob's being particularly good and just £3.50 for a pint's worth (the Lakewood was £3.80). The pool area has now been sub-divided from the rear entrance and is now a small dining area with the area out front, separated from the bar, still laid out for dining too despite how quiet it was on my visit. Still a few negatives - a TV on mute with subtitles was being watched by no-one and muzak was little bit too Radio 1-ish. Still, the food is a combination of English and Jamaican dishes which is novel and they also have a 75.5% ABV rum for the adventerous.

The sole pub in Stone village now (The Bugle Horn is just outside the 'city limits') and slightly sunken from the roadside, this is another boozer that has seen better days. There are some attractive flourishes with some exposed stone and a snuggy area located in the front of the pub (which can't be accessed from the street - you have to enter from the car park out back) is nicely decorated and a haven from the overloud music. There was no real ale available (a single handpump was unclipped) and other options were met with 'no', so a pint of Carlsberg was the remaining, sane option. With just a barman and one other punter in attendance on a weeknight, it's clear this place isn't doing itself justice. Of course, I could be completely wrong and the dray was due the next day and this place is usually rammed at the weekends, etc., but, hey, you can only judge on what you see...
