"Under new management" proclaimed the A-board outside which is always a poisoned chalice, but this pub has clung on over the years despite the demise of the nearby Royal Oak. A stone-built two-roomer; you enter into the larger of the two rooms, with the J-shaped, stone-fronted bar centre-left, a large brick open hearth with stove against the right-hand wall, three wooden tables with chairs, and a small flat screen TV to the right of the fireplace tuned into Heart FM. The bar counter is partitioned by a half-wall, and the second, smaller room is served by a tinier continuation of the bar, with a solitary large wooden table and chairs, a large wooden-framed mirror and another flat screen TV tuned to BBC News 24 above a smaller brick fireplace. The three ales offered were a play-it-safe triumvirate of Sharp's Doom Bar, Fuller's London Pride and Adnam's Ghost Ship. I've been served one or two superb pints of the latter before, but this wasn't one of them; perhaps not pulled through enough prior to my selection (£3.65 a pint by the way). Bare-boarded throughout, and with the internal portion of the exterior wall exposed stone, this has a semi-homely interior, but feels a little soulless at present. I wish them luck, so may be worth a revisit before the year is out.
