This is now becoming a real favourite. Always 2 or 3 ales in perfect nick, always a few friendly chatty regulars in the foxhole bar. It’s a real treasure up on the moors and the pub has a real idyllic and unchanging nature that is so hard to come by now.

Great looking pub with its classic Tetley signage, in a tranquil location up a steep hill from Parbold or Appley Bridge. This is still a pretty traditional country pub, but has recently changed management and become a little more relaxed and drinker friendly. The cosy back snug (the Fox Hole) is where drinkers congregate, this area features a sports TV and a stuffed fox. The rest is comfortable but a bit more standard and you may find it full of diners. A fairly limited drink range but 3 ales were on, a superb quality Lancaster Blonde barely touched the sides after the walk up here so I stayed for a few.

Set high upon the moors, this country pub closes early on a Saturday evening, reflecting its reliance on its food business.

Arriving at around 8pm, it felt as if I'd arrived after last orders. After a fair wait, the landlord did appear to serve me and immediately warned me that they were just about to finish serving food. He seemed a bit surprised that I just wanted a drink and I was directed to sit in the public bar area.

The small public bar felt quite traditional and had just two other locals sat at the bar. The remainder of the pub was quite cosy and was clearly set aside for diners, who were all polishing off their meals or having post-meal drinks.

The Rigbye Arms certainly has a nice location. But unless you're a local, you may be made to feel a little uncomfortable if you're just stopping for a drink, especially if you dare to walk in at around closing time at 8pm.

For the record, the real ales were Wainwright & Landlord.
