On the very north edge of Wigan here in a strange leafy area with no phone signal. This is one of those pubs with an iconic reputation that looks historic (albeit rundown) from outside, but flatters to deceive inside. It consists of a spacious and very open plan bar room plus a sunken area with pool table. A few historic features remain though, most notably a massive fireplace. One real ale clipped on the bar, Hobgoblin - not really in the mood for that so I went for an absurdly cheap (£3.50) pint of Shipyard. Good atmosphere on a Friday evening with a respectable bunch of locals and a few dogs - as a community local it’s okay but the overloud music, excess of TVs and awful choices of grey wallpaper all detract from what should be a cosy pub. Apparently it’s awaiting a refurb but being owned by Admiral Taverns I dread to think what that will bring..
