An excellent free house in an unpromising position beside the railway and a long walk from the town centre. On our first visit there was one other customer and, if it weren't for the roaring fire, not much of a welcome. There's an old fashioned juke box to one side of the bar, with music to match from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and the aforementioned fire to the other side. Other than that, there's not much of note, with plain grey paint on most walls (exposed stone in places) and a few photos of local interest.

The next night, encouraged by the superb range of beers, we called in again at a similar time to find the pub full to bursting with locals celebrating a birthday (or was it two birthdays?). The previous night's sole customer recognised us and told us that the barmaid had been climbing the walls with boredom the night before, but was happier now.

On the bar are five hand pumps with beers from local and farther-flung but still northern breweries: Worsthorne, Reedly Hallows, Wentworth and Rudgate. These change constantly, as the range of old pump clips on display confirms. We tried four different beers across our two visits, all in excellent condition and well served, one of which had been seen off by the time of our second, the only one we didn't fancy being Rudgate's Lemon Hopsickle, possibly the most off-putting name for a beer (after Old Slug Porter). This is a proper locals pub, with a real fire and cheap beer (oh, didn't I mention - £2.40 a pint?). What's not to like? Well worth the walk from Tod - or you could catch a bus.

This pub used to be a free house but it's now been taken over by Copper Dragon. The bar is stright in front of you as you enter. There's a lounge area to the right with some settles and some unusual wooden tables with gashes in them. There's also an open gas fire. To the right is another area with a pool table. Five hadnpumps on the bar of which four were bring used. Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Black Gold & Best along with Pennine Rossendale Ale as a guest. We both had a pint of the Golden Pippin and I also had a Black Gold and my collegue had a Rossendale. All were good pints. It's a bit rough & ready is this place but it's a good pub.
