Old Boots left this review about Golden Lion Hotel

A multi space or multi room older pub including a Thai restaurant part to the front right. There’s a pool table in one front corner to the left, and a stage in the centre room opposite the servery. The stage is there as the pub majors on live and recorded music judging by the kit. Dark interesting decor in blue. As well as the front door there’s a door in off the canal tow path at the side. Beerwise it has six pulls with beers from interesting small breweries plus four T-Bars, beers today were from Cloudwater, Eagles Crag, Vocation and First Chop.

This is the second music venue pub in town, plus an in house Thai kitchen, which has proved popular with the regulars. The interior of the pub is a good size, with the main bar facing you as you enter. There was also a pop up bar, situated in a side lounge area, serving two keg and a good sized collection of bottled beers. The main part of the pub had eclectic wallpaper and furnishings and lots of framed photos of various artist/singers around the walls. Four pumps on the bar serving two beers from Eagles Craig, which is the local Brewery, Pale Eagle and Eagle of Darkness, Saltaire Titus and Nightjar Brewery Big fish, Little Fish. We enjoyed our visit here and the manager was very friendly and welcoming.

The Golden Lion is a decent looking white painted pub that is close to the Rochdale canal.
Once inside there is a decent sized single L shaped room with the bar facing, the floor is part stone and carpeted, there is comfy bench seating plus some normal tables and chairs, there is a raised area to the front left.
There were four real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Bridestone Blonde which went down well, the other beers were BrideStone Pennine Gold,Vocation Heart & Soul and Taylor Landlord.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a drink in.

A bit of a car crash inside. Its all Thai themed, book shop, antique parlour or whatever its trying to be. 4 cask ales save it. Also it could do with paying the heating bill as its freezing inside. And that's in September.

Reopened under new ownership and after a refurbishment. They've made a decent job of what is effectively one massive room with some side areas. One area is carpeted and there's some OK wallpaper around the place. It's never going to be cosy since a previous owner ripped it all out, but it's definitely an improvement. Friendly bar staff and a well kept pint of Copper Dragon helped. It still looks a lot better from the outside than the inside, but it's worth a look in again now.

One of the young lads at the bar asked for two pints of becks and a pint of Carling the young lad served them i said you told me you had none.
He then told me they did not have much left they are waiting for a delivery and the draught was for regular customers only till the delivery came tomorrow.

Called in again last night and the beer had improved a great deal since my visit with A & H below. I had the Challenger IPA and my colleague had 1816, both were good pints.

An impressive looking traditional pub, just off the Rochdale Road and next to the Rochdale canal. Unfortunately, the interior has been unsympathetically opened up into a largely soulless space, despite some of the original features remaining.

The pub features CopperDragon beers: Best Bitter, Challenger IPA, Scott’s 1816 and Golden Pippin. During our visit the Golden Pippin was off. However, I’m sure it was no great loss as the rest of the beers were served at a freezing temperature. The Best also tasted very tired.

As a positive, the predominantly young staff were friendly and attentive.

Food is available and looks to be based around pub staples. The question of food offers some insight into the clientele: A young lady not being able to find anything she liked on the menu decided to order some in from a local takeaway!

Although reasonably busy when we called late Saturday afternoon, the place had a strangely subdued atmosphere.

Several picnic benches are next to the canal for fair weather drinking.

In short, an adequate watering-hole, but nothing inspiring.
