Chef & Brewer establishment on the road west out of Wokingham to Barkham. It was quite warm and sunny on our lunchtime Friday visit in autumn. As such, quite a few were sat outside in a pleasantly green garden. The large car park was reasonably busy.

The interior has plenty of old beams and several different areas for diners and drinkers. Unfortunately, the real ale range was not quite up to par, with just 3 national beers available - Greene King Abbot, St Austell Tribute & Black Sheep Best Bitter. A CAMRA discount is offered.

A smart looking Chef & Brewer pub,Multi- roomed with a mixture of stone and wood flooring giving a traditional if not authentic pub feel. There were four handpumps with the choice from Greene King IPA, Old Golden Hen and a guest beer of Red Squirrel Mr Squirrel.
Its a nicely done chain pub ,but not really my cup of tea.

Many moons on and I revisit. Still a C&B outlet and has had at least two refurbs, although the layout is ostensibly the same - wood beams, old b&w photos etc, just jazzed up with the latest livery. They seem to have made a lot more of the outside seating areas. Three ales on and a good choice of West Berks GOB, Courage Best and Truman's Lazarus with one turned round. My Lazarus was close to perfect and I could have drunk it all afternoon. Based on the Truman’s alone I’d want to pop back fairly soon. Up a point to 8, high praise for a Chef & Brewer...

Very large (much more so than it looks from the outside) restaurant/pub (Chef & Brewer) just outside Wokingham. Nicely kitted out inside, lots of wood and olde worlde ambience that you know isn’t entirely original, plus dimmed lights and candles. Three real ales are usually on (the ubiquitous Courage plus two guests) which are usually in good condition. So worth stopping for a beer. Given how cavernous the place is the bar really needs to be made bigger as I can see how they fail to cope when the place fills up - I’ve heard numerous complaints about the speed of service at busy times. Went last evening. I must say the food was great. Having booked a table but arived about 15 mins early the Guy who met us was realy good but seemed to be " a rabbit in the headlights". Lots of Ums and Ahrs. He soon got us sorted and seated, took our drinks order and was off. The drinks arived a couple of mins later (10/10). Our waiter, nice young chap was over very soon to take our order. He insisted on showing us "How the Menue works", (read it, order, job done). He was a bit to attentive and In your face for our liking ( mind I would rather this than no attention at all, as is the case in some places). Asking every 10 mins if everything was ok. Just a minor down side. Generaly a good evening. We WILL go back again, in the summer. The Garden looks good even in the dark. The evening gets a 9/10. And a big thanks.
