called into this pub on Friday evening on way back to Huddersfield. sam smiths beer and the taddy lager was spot on. pub was crammed with outside seating to both front and back although very busy the landlord and landlady did a sterling job serving people quickly. had some friendly banter with some of the locals round the bar which was all in good humour all in all a good friendly pub I will be calling again if passing

This is one of two Samuel Smith's pubs on Huddersfield Rd in the village of Newhey. It is known locally as the "Bottom Bird" and has recently been refurbished and comprises of a Lounge,a Taproom,a small Public Bar area and a Games Room complete with a Pool Table and Dart Board.
The Taproom is heated by a large coal fire and whilst, like most Taprooms it is basically furnished,it is nevertheless cosy and inviting.
The Lounge has been fitted out with comfortable seating and there are two coal fires, one at each end of the room.
The Landlord and his Wife have brought about big changes during their period of management. For some years prior to their arrival the pub had a somewhat unsavory reputation in the village. However, due to standards of behavior imposed by the present management that situation no longer exists.
It can best be described as a working man's pub as a certain amount of swearing can be heard on occasions, however, despite this,it is well worth a visit as the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The beers are always in tip top condition but no meals or bar snacks are available.

A tidy old fashioned Sam Smiths pub that seems to have a good lunchtime trade. Was slightly surprised that they did not stock the stout though

This pub is known locally as the “bottom bird” due to the close proximity of another similarly named pub(top bird). It's a Sam Smiths pub (as is the top bird) but sadly it's keg only. Has a large lounge to the right as you enter and a tap room to the left with a dart board. It's slightly shabby but very clean and tidy, there was a huge dog sitting on one of the sofa's, it took a double take to realise it was a toy, very lifelike. Low prices and friendly regulars, it's a proper working mans local.
