Upmarket multi-room Sam's with coal fire and an early 80s feel; this is the ‘posh’ Sams in town, with the Nelson a few minutes further up the road attracting the earthier characters as I was shortly to discover; though both have lovely tiles in their porches. When in Rome and all that meant I plumped for a half of the keg Dark Mild which was fine. Humph’s shadow looms large in here, the barmaid got naggy about me having a look on my phone to work out where the next pub was. It was decent enough and felt quite respectable. 6.5

The Eagle Hotel was my second pub, and second Samuel Smith’s pub, of the day on a recent Monday crawl through Rochdale. I’m not a huge fan of SS pubs, but the OBB was £1 for a half so can’t complain. As usual there are no televisions, there is no music and communication devices such as computers and mobiles are banned. The usual SS keg is available, but the hand pumps mentioned in the previous posts have been removed.
The interior consists of two front seating areas, the left of which houses a dartboard. An L shaped bar runs up the left wall facing seating up the right and a dartboard at the rear. Out the back is a small enclosed beer yard with a couple of picnic tables for smokers, and people wanting to use their phones. I found the service to be friendly and would return here if passing.

A nice friendly Sam Smiths pub. Couldn't see any stuffed animals though there was a good collection of dead flies stuck to the flypaper hanging around. The 4 handpumps only dispensed Old Brewery Bitter. No stout available.

Quite spacious Sam Smiths pub that seems to have a good lunchtime trade.Called in one afternoon and was impressed with the excellent pint of stout but not so impressed with the landlord serving customers while talking on his mobile phone.

Sam Smiths pub just on the edge of the town centre. Has a loyal following of regulars plus some passing trade at weekends from people on their way into town. Decent pint of OBB, competitively priced of course. Has a interesting if rather bedraggled number of stuffed critters around the pub in glass boxes. Friendly welcome from the staff and a very varied clientele.
