It has been recently refurbished and is now a cocktail and music bar and has lost a chunk of its charm along the way. No cask ale any longer, so we settled for a BrewDog Punk IPA whilst we tried to persuade the person installing the Halloween Frankenstein’s monster at the front door to change its default voice to Spanish.

October 2013
Still flogging the cocktails here and still Greene King at the bar – a double-header of IPA and IPA Reserve (Reserve was £1.90 a half and was ok if perhaps a bit flat) served by slightly over-familiar but ostensibly friendly barman. Light and bright inside, with the rear wall nicely decorated with music paper clippings and a large Bowie art-portrait. Loudish piped music but well-chosen rock and Indie made it easier on the ear. There was a comedy mish-mash of seating including two ladies permers from the 1960's. My 60's plastic swivel chair was comfy though and I wouldn’t have minded taking it home. There was a basic rear patio area. One for the under-40’s and trendies but I thought it was decent - there’s enough here to make it stand out from the crowd in town. Rated 6.5

PS the fact it’s still here presumably validates my comment below about the local council’s project prowess!

Change of landlord. New fella seems to be moving it in a more cocktail-oriented direction and is a nice bloke. Pub has two ales, both GK (IPA and Speckled Hen) – he was sharp enough to note that the pint of Speckled Hen was barrel-end and offered me the IPA as alternative. Most places would just dump the grot in front of you and demand payment. Not cheap (my GK IPA was £2.70) but the beer is well-kept and the guy obviously takes some pride in serving it well. The interior has been smartened up and the small beer garden and bright conservatory area have been made easier to access. Is under threat of demolition to make way for a new shopping centre but the local council are so inept at doing any big project I suspect this’ll be here for a few more years yet. Better than it was and one to put on the Woky crawl list now. Rated 6
