Called in for the first time in a while last week. Nothing much has changed. Jennings Cumberland & Lees Bitter on the bar. Both averagely kept and a little expensive for what is bottom end cask ale. Very quiet on a Friday night at 10 which doesn't surprise me. It's a very ordinary pub now.

After a few weeks of closure the Albion has now reopened. It's had a bit of a spruce up both inside and out with a new colour scheme outside and a new wallpapered look inside. The first thing that hit me as I walked in on Friday lunchtime was the overpowering smell of cooked fish, which wasn't pleasant. There are now only 3 handpumps on the bar and only two of these were on, selling the very uninventive Lees Bitter and Theakstons Best. I had a Lees which was a decent beer, however it was £2.80 a pint!! This is extortionate for Lees Bitter anywhere and especially round here. There's a long way to go before it's back to anything like it was, but at least a start has been made.

Under a previous landlord this pub spent 9 consecutive years in the Good Beer Guide. It was then taken over by someone who really didn't know how to keep decent ale and slowly lost trade. It's now been taken over by a new, young landlord, so we called in on Sunday to see what had changed. It now has a fruit machine and a jukebox which is a major change in direction. There are still 6 handpumps, 5 were on selling Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, TT Best & Landlord, Moorhouse's Pride of Pendle and Lees Bitter. The Golden Pippin & Lees were OK, the TT Best was good and the Landlord & Pride Of Pendle were poor (sent back). The staff are being sent on cellar training courses in the next week or two so hopefully the beer quality will improve. As you enter the bar is to the left and the main room has been opened up from two rooms. There's still a separate room to the right. There are photos of F1 Grand Prix cars & drivers on the walls and there's also a bistro at the side. Still has a good set of regulars, many of which we know well, so the banter was top class as usual. It's got quite a way to go beerwise to get back to where it was, but at least a start has been made. We'll call back in a few weeks to check on progress.
