Taken over by Big Smoke Brewery – which has caused all sorts of excitement locally, though I was mildly sceptical, having had ropey cask in at least two of their other outlets. Anyway in we trudged to see if this would be an exception to the rule – it wasn’t. We ditched both our beers, one of which was tepid and the other on the cusp of turning (Soloaris, NBSS 1). A shame, as they’ve done a decent job of making the interior a bit more pleasant. But there we go, it’s another ‘stack and rack and forget’ operation much like the Corner House in Windsor.

Awful service, awful half of Old Golden Hen, awful visit, awfully quick escape. Rated 2

In the intervening years this place has had a smart new refit. Was passing the other night and spotted two handpumps, with one on. Castle Rock Harvest Pale was laughably bad, could smell it coming. Was at least taken straight off but I left thirsty. Rated 3

Classic Greene King refit pub. Great if that's your bag, but it ain't mine. Clientèle tend to the younger, slightly boozier side especially on a Friday and Saturday night. Plus point is that it sold a decent pint of GK XX Mild so I can't be too harsh. Rated 5.

Update- now part of the growing Big Smoke pub chain so my previous rating of 4 has been scrapped pending a revisit sometime in the future.

Dec 2016
A modernised split level pub, a small street level bar area with a larger raised room to the rear. There were four metal hand pumps in the lower bar and repeated in the other bar(i think) , however there was only one ale avaiable throughout, Balaclava Bitter which is apparently a rebadged Hardy and Hanson Bitter, fairly bland it was too.
this pub did little for me.
