Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Grey Friar (JD Wetherspoon)

Large, split-level, building with a modern exterior but a fairly traditional look inside. Small front terrace. Used to have a good selection of real ales from the two banks of five handpumps, although only Oakham JHB, Darwins Origin from Salopian (£2.46) and Windsor & Eton's Guardsman were available on this visit in addition to the usual trio of Ruddles, Doom Bar and Abbot.

Workaday Spoons housed in what looks like Gordon Britass's leisure centre. Big plate glass windows for light, not exactly a stunning view from the raised seating area though. Five guests, Great Newsome Mild a bit long pour (NBSS 2.5). Food a bit so-so as well (and these days I am a Wethergrub connoisseur). Felt a bit depressing overall, needs an overhaul. The Twelve Tellers is the better JDW in town.

I tried to have a breakfast here before the PuG crawl of Preston started. Seven or eight awaiting service at the bar and one girl serving. Pathetic.

The Grey Friar is a large Spoons with a less than inviting exterior, but it is actually a decent pub. The long bar that runs up the left hand wall supports two banks of six handpumps as well as a standard and premium keg range. The usual JDW food menu is in operation, I had a traditional breakfast that was worth the money. The interior is split level with raised seating along the right hand windows and again at the rear. There are also a few booths dotted around. The service was friendly, but they could have done with more than one barmaid on duty late on a Friday morning.

A large modern Spoons on a road junction, which I felt determined not to like on entering. However once inside it grew on me somewhat, having a fairly pleasant atmosphere with the gentle buzz of conversation. One end features the old 'library'-style furnishings. The beer range seemed good, with guests Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, Holderness Dark, Green Jack Lurcher Stout, Windsor & Eton Father Thames and something from Elgoods on the clips.

despite the unpromising exterior it's a decent alternative to the rather majestic Twelve Tellers, though I wonder if it is suffering a little as it was quiet even by Tuesday morning standards. I couldn't see anyone else eating breakfast at 9 this morning which is very rare in a Spoons these days. beer choice nothing special from what I could see.

Large open Spoons with the bar on the left side. Steps up to the window seats which is where I sat. Reasonable enough beer choice with two sets of six pumps. One plus is that the toilets are up four or five steps to the left rear - not the usual long haul job.

Now while this doesn't have the grandeur of the other, newer, Wethers this isn't too bad. Its not great either but it does its job and is worth a visit. It is, as noted, not the best looking place and it has the usual Wethers interior the beer choice was decent on this visit.

I went into this one with some dread as it looks absolutely hideous from the outside. Inside it's standard Wetherspoon consisting of a large rectangular room with the bar on the left and raised areas at the back and to the right. There are some bookcases at the back. It's rather like a giant version of one of the 1990s shop conversions but because there are windows at the front and right it's not dark and dingy.
The bar has twelve hand pumps where the two GK beers were doubled up and there was a cider, Doom Bore, Exmoor Gold, Purity UBU, Everard's Inbetween, Hawkshead Cumbrian 5 Hop, Lytham Blond and Vale Black Beauty Porter. I went for the 5 Hop (£2.50) which was in superb nick.
This is a standard Spoons that I thought was slightly above average.
