My first visit here for a number of years, as it tends to be overshadowed for beer choice by the likes of the Sun Hotel, the Three Mariners and Merchants 1688 among nearby pubs. It's very much music oriented, with a mixing console sitting unused in the window at the time of my afternoon visit. There were two banks of four hand pumps, with one cider and three or four real ales. Two of the pump clips were hand-written, but as one of them was Holts Two Hoots in very good condition I really didn't mind. The walls are absolutely covered with framed photos of musicians; none of them as far as I could see of anything other than local renown, so it's nice for them to have this much recognition.

this is a really lovely looking Edwardian pub and cosy enough inside too - but it does indeed get very cramped and is a very sweaty place to drink when a band comes on. This is the place for the more interesting live music in Lancaster rather than the wham-bam rock and punk you tend to see in the other pubs. Real ale selection usually fairly average as noted.

I like this pub. Its fairly small with a thin room stretching back. Compact inside, especially if the area for bands is clogged with equipment. The fairly pedestrian choice of 6 real ales is a bit disappointing but I still like it.

Good looking pub on the outside. The inside is a collection of small rooms that looks like it needs a good clean and a lot of TLC. In fact Ms CAMRA said it made her itch! The most boring selection of real ale I've seen in a long time with Hobgoblin, Black Sheep & Cumberland. My pint of Cumberland was OK. Ms CAMRA's red wine was awful. I really don't think we'll be calling in here again it was like Gods waiting room on a Thursday night.

A very intriguing looking pub from the outside, especially with the curved glass front bay window. The interior of the pub had lots of dark timber and buttoned leather banquette seating at the front. The clientele were mostly friendly locals. There were five handpumps on our visit, with three in use, offering Deuchers IPA, Black Sheep and Jennings Cumberland. Cumberland was our choice here.

It seems that this fine old pub is turning into a yo-yo outlet. I put my head round the door last week and the only beer of the four I would have been remotely interested in having was Castle Rock (the alternatives were two - yes two - GK and Black Sheep). Pfft.

After seeing the place go downhill first hand a few years back, I ventured in to this fine old pub with a hint of trepidation lest it still be terrible. Fortunately there seems to have been a much-needed turnaround. The interior has been spruced up without damaging the heritage factor and in fact probably enhancing it. Five ales available; Hobgoblin, Jennings Cumberland, Moorhouse Pride of Pendle, Lancaster Blonde and Black Sheep. My Moorhouse was perfectly fine. The dark green leather(ette?) banquette seating was restored, the carpet cleaned and the wonderful bowed stained glass front window was sparkling. Old jazz was on the stereo (a blessed change!) which complemented the upright piano and the black and white pics of musicians who have played at the pub. There were also some bus pics for the geek in your life. All in all very atmospheric. This looks to be back towards its best and should be a must-visit on a crawl of the city. Rated 8

Oh dear, this place seems to be sliding downhill, getting unkempt with the beer selection unimaginative and averagely kept. Must stop trading off past glories and get a grip! Rating 6

A corking heritage pub, with lots of ale (though a bit mainstream on my visit though I am assured it usually more eclectic), lots of character and impromptu music sessions. The interior is long single narrow room with a bar on the right hand side, with leather wall seats and wooden furniture and pictures of various musicians mounted along the walls. The stained glass window at the front of the pub is mighty impressive. Lancaster has a lot of good pubs, and this is one of the top three - definitely the best in the immediate town centre. If you're lucky enough to get a seat (it's always busy after 3) you really could stay here all evening. Rated 9
