Brainy Pool left this review about The Bowerham

back for a quick visit to what was once my local as a student. It has been modernised since then and basically smashed through into one room with umpteen TVs and different areas- one with a pool table. Some bare walls and a refurb done to a nice standard. Very friendly larger than life barmaids and clientele a mixed bag of student locals and others. There’s a vast beer garden to the side which is mostly just unkempt grass, houses have long been mooted for the space. A couple of ales on, Wainwrights Gold and a superb Cross Bay IPA. It’s a decent if unspectacular local as I remembered.

I was the only customer on my noontime visit - doubtless it's busier later. There was an early football match showing on the screens, and there was live music advertised for the evening. There are five hand pumps, with York Guzzler doubled up, Coniston Bluebird, Everards Beacon and Lancaster Blonde, four different beers but not much difference between them in terms of taste, I would say. My half of Guzzler went down well, though. This pub provides an excellent facility for locals, but not really worth the trip out of town for the beer tourist, unless you happen to be on your way to Scotforth.

Popped in for a swift one en route to Scotforth. The pub is pretty large inside, with plenty of seating. It looked to have been refurbished fairly recently and the choice of ales (five) was quite impressive; my Hawkshead was spot-on. TV’s were evidence but switched off, I guess they’re for the football as it seemed like that type of place. Apparently there’s a bowling green to the rear. Plenty of customers and a decent atmosphere. A good first impression.
