Nice warm atmosphere and an open fire was welcoming on a bitterly cold day.lots of randem photos on the walls and a nice little outside area at the rear..Only a few customers on my afternoon visit. Its the sort of pub i could send a few hours in but the choice of 6x and landlord soon got me on the move.

Another festive season revisit to a Windsor pub that had changed ownership. My only other visit here many years back was unimpressive, so I wondered whether it would simply be a slap of paint and a pint of grot available. However I was really impressed, some serious money has been spent here and the place both outside and in has been refurbished like a proper traditional old pub, rather than the stripped-out room it was before. Two interconnected rooms inside, which I don’t recall before – has the rear part been knocked into? Four ales on if I recall correctly, and my pint of St Austell Proper Job was in really good shape. A friendly crowd in too. I really enjoyed my stop here and will make sure I do it again next time I’m town. 7.5

June 2011 (as Criterion)
Corner local at the bottom of Peascod street. Two ales (Pride and Landlord) - the Landlord was good. Two screens for footy, though one had incorrect aspect ratios, a basic and avoidable error. A dull mish-mash interior (pine cladding, stripped floor) all a bit soulless really. The ‘Superior Staines Ales’ windows was the only real point of interest. Rated 5

A corner pub with a tidy recent refurb and a new name,it has two rooms that are interconected and being busy on my visit there was a good buzz about the place, various royal memorabila adourned the walls including some Duke of Edinburgh classics.Six handpumps are on the quite tiny corner bar, Brakspear Bitter, T.T Landlord, London Pride, Sharps Cornish Coaster, Hobgoblin and Adnams Lighthouse were available, the Landlord being a decent drop. A nice pub.

The Criterion is a small basic locals pub on a street corner just outside the main tourist area of town.

It's an L shaped bar with an additional room at the side, which features, notably, a large framed newspaper page - "Mersey Beat Issue" - dated June 1962 with the headline "Beatles top poll".

The Criterion is still badged as a Courage pub. Frosted windows bearing the inscription - "Charles Ashby & Co India Pale Ales" - indicate an earlier ownership by a former Staines brewery.

There's 3 handpumps, but on my recent visit, only Courage Best was on at a price of £ 3.20p, which seems quite pricey for a pub like this.

Some of the locals here seemed to be quite characters, but the welcome was nothing other than warm and friendly. If you like old fashioned rather basic pubs like this, I'd be inclined to poke your head round the door and see if there's any decent beer on.
