As described by others, below, this large traditional roadside pub has a good reputation for its food, and it’s a popular village local. The public bar on the right – The Mendip Bar – has a number of sports trophies on display and a dartboard. The larger dining room – The Chewton Lounge – was empty when we visited. The décor is starting to look a bit tired, though they have put laminate around the bar where the carpet had frayed. There is a good sized car park and a large garden at the back, which has previously one Britain in Bloom awards. There are also a few bench seats at the front, though the views are limited. Ales on were Gorge Best from Cheddar, and Tribute. There also 3 keg cider and three premium lagers on offer. Worth dropping in.

The only pub in the village of Chewton Mendip, the landlord (or was he just the barman?) certainly seemed a larger than life character. There are a couple of rooms, one used for drinking and another for dining. We had happened to choose the dining room. However, he was happy to let us sit there, as it was quiet for a Saturday lunchtime, with little dining trade. The lounge was a cosy affair. As Blackthorn noted over 7 years ago, we also remarked upon carpet right up to the bar itself. The carpet is looking a little worn in places.
Another family did arrive whilst we were there. They found many things on the menu weren't actually available. It was a similar story on the bar itself, with some of the draft selection also unavailable. However, there were 3 cask ales on - St Austell Tribute & Proper Job & Cheddar Gorge Best.
At the rear is a large car park, with a garden beyond that on a bank.

A traditional looking pub on the main A37 road through this small village, it has an attractive appearance and has won “Mendip in Bloom” on a number of occasions for it’s displays of hanging baskets and such like. There are a couple of picnic benches at the front of the pub, but you’re sat very close to the main road, so the garden at the rear may be a preferable spot if you’re sitting outside.
Inside it’s divided in to a couple of rooms with the public bar to the right and a larger lounge area to the left. Décor wise it’s very traditional, almost dated perhaps, but nonetheless very pleasant. The lounge area is carpeted throughout and this even extends to the front of the bar counter! A small gas fire was in one corner whilst the seating is a mixture of tables and chairs, some red banquet seating and a church pew or two. The obligatory horse brasses were dotted around, and even a couple of brass horses on the mantelpiece. There was dark wood panelling on the lower part of the walls, and a number of old black and white photographs and pictures elsewhere. The bar looked to be of a fairly similar appearance and included a small TV perched up in the corner, although this was not in use.
Menu wise, the traditional theme continued with a good selection of “pub grub” options such as beef curry, cottage pie, lasagne, ham egg & chips, etc., as well as a number of sandwiches, salads and omelettes. These were mostly priced around the £8 - £10 range, and a number of dishes were available in different portion sizes. Friday night is fish night, with fresh deliveries from Brixham apparently, and these were chalked up on a specials board. We opted for the Battered Cod & Chips and this was a decent slab of fish in a crispy batter, and a very generous portion. Scampi & Chips was similarly well received.
Beers on tap were Courage Best, Butcombe and the seasonal Trick or Treat from Cottage Brewery. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Dry. All in all, I thought this was a great pub with it’s quintessential country pub feel, friendly staff and good pub food.

lovely pub in the mendip part of somerset, at least 4 real ales on and they have theme nights so dont be surprised if you see wierd and wonderful people all dressed up in fancy clothes.big dining room has a no smoking policy and a garden area as well. worth a visit
