a well established B&B with a fairly sterile pub/sports bar attached. Heavily modernised, three TVs hanging over the bar and half of the room dominated by tourist information and the hotel check in desk, it’s hardly the most comfortable place for a pint though the semi-decent Thwaites ale and friendly staff are a saving grace. The accommodation is also good value.

This double building in two different styles could really be something impressive with a bit of thought and sympathy, instead of which it's been modernised to within an inch of its life. The older building to the right has the word "lounge" on its street door, but there was no access this way when I was here, and from inside it is evidently now the dining room. The main part of the newer building has been opened up into what amounts to one big room with the bar on the right. Soulless and anonymous, it is dominated by one of those landlords who just love to hold court with their guests. He was so concentrated on what he was telling his audience that he managed to forget which beer I had ordered while reaching for a glass. I wish he hadn't bothered, for the beer (Marstons/Ringwood Razorback) was in dreadfully poor condition and I left half of it on the table (still in its glass, I hasten to add) rather than get into an argument with him about it. That's £1.90 for a half, compared with £1.70 in Arnside's only other pub. Where they know how to look after their beer.

A Thwaites house with separate bar and restaurant. When I was there - a busy Saturday night - one was full, the other was completely empty. There was a scrum at the bar, and the empty drum kit supplied the reason for the sudden rush - it was the break in the band's performance. It was already too noisy for my liking, and as there was only Wainwright on hand pump and vanishingly small chance of getting served before the band returned, I decided to take my custom elsewhere.
