A really nice Irish style pub, split into two rooms either side of the side door entrance, the corner door being blocked off. No real ale but a couple of craft options amongst the keg options. By far the best pub I encountered in a poor pub town, the addition of a decent cask beer or two would elevate it to an eight or nine rating, as it stands a solid seven.

A chintzy Irish pub comprised of three rooms (one marked as staff only). The left room is more of a bar/eating area, the right more snug with lots of brasses, knick-knacks and photos plastered everywhere including the ceiling. Some random wall scribblings in foreign languages (mainly German). The rugby was on here plus an upright piano (tuned?). Sadly the place, like so many of Slough’s other pubs that day, was freezing cold. No cask ale (the Guinness was a very competitive £3.40) though I spotted (too late) lots of bottled ale in fridge from the likes of Sheps and WEBrew. The 60’s newspaper/magazine clippings decorating the walls of the gents bog made for a slightly more interesting 2 minutes than usual. The clientèle seemed friendly. Entertainment came via someone clearly off his box on substances repeatedly and mindlessly banging a plate glass window of the office opposite whilst dribbling. Oh, Slough…

This back street Victorian corner Irish pub in unfashionable Slough is one of those very rare things, a top notch pub that has no real ale.
Instead , it has a friendly and efficient staff, a top landlord , Tom King , who has been in situ for a few years now, a quirky decor which gives the place some character, and as you can imagine usually a superb pint of Guinness.
The Herschel Arms is named after the Herschel family who lived in slough for many years in the 16th and 17th centuries,, most noticeably Sir William Herschel who was the private Astronomer to George III who died in the early 1800’s. It has been recorded as a pub in local records since 1864.
The main bar is full of bits of art and assorted bric-a-brac, and then the back bar and the very pleasant covered garden walls have several hand written beer and life related quotes, some in German for reasons I’m not sure of.
I’m a very infrequent visitor to this pub as it is not usually on my radar due to lack of real ale, but on the few occasions I have to venture into Slough I always look it up , because there’s not many traditional back street community boozers like this left now where you are always guaranteed a warm welcome.
