The Berkshire Arms is a large roadhouse with lots of patio space out the front and down the left side. My visit was midweek just before midday so I was the only customer, although a few aged punters started to filter in for lunch just before I departed. To the left of the entrance is a small raised seating area and more seating runs up the left hand side. The bar to the right faces high tables that run along the front windows. The large split-level right hand side is for dining. The exposed brick and old wooden posts and ceiling beam décor is very tired. Some of the posts look like they were raised with the Mary Rose, a bit over the top if you ask me. I was informed by the manageress that a refurb is imminent, which is why the menu was reduced. I went for a ciabatta which was harder than the aforementioned wooden posts. On the drinks front, premium keg was available alongside Fosters and I counted three hand pumps. One was unused and the GK IPA was off which left Abbot Ale as the lone cask choice. The service was polite, but I think I’ll drive past next time.

Large, bog standard Chef & Brewer with the ‘fake olde worlde wood beams’ décor of those outlets from a few years ago. Three ales; Bombardier, Courage Best and Brains SA. The latter was perfunctory. Arrived late Sunday afternoon and the place was deserted.

March 2014
Chef & Brewer pub set back off the A4. Looked open and we walked in…but all lights off, no staff and no customers. We resisted the urge to pour ourselves a pint and headed off.
