Undergone (yet another) refurb.Closed and advertising for new licensees.

July 2012
This is now a straight-friendly gay pub. Offered two Marstons-list ales in middling shape last week. Good luck to them. Awful karaoke!

June 2011
Has had a makeover, being painted cream! Presumably in attempt to make it less intimidating. Latest visit found a handful of Marstons-list ales in decent shape. Rumours are this is going to have yet another overhaul so watch this space...

October 2010
Used to be a scary goth/rock bar with corrugated iron dividers and a fibreglass rhino head. Got a makeover a while back and is now a lot more mainstream. Promised much with the ale by installing 6 handpumps but rarely delivered more than a couple of mediocrities. Some dubious punters towards the end, moved down here after being kicked out the Blagrave, I'd wager.

I popped in to the Rising Sun on Saturday evening a couple of weeks ago when the pub was pretty quiet. In fact there were more people sitting out the back smoking than there were in the pub. The bar is found on the right hand wall where standard draught products alongside San Miguel and Amstel can be purchased. There are six hand pumps, but four of these were unused leaving Brakspear Bitter and Hobgoblin as the ale options. Various drinks promotions are advertised on chalkboards that line the front of the pub and there is a weekly Karaoke on Thursday evenings.
Opposite the bar is some open plan seating and a pool table. At the rear is raised area with two dartboards but these were out of action as a high table with a group sitting at it stretched across the oche of both boards.
The rainbows on the front of the pub denote this place as being gay friendly, but I didn’t notice any difference from a ‘non gay friendly’ pub (for want of a better expression). I certainly didn’t catch any drag queens in the act of stapling posters to the wall that advertise an upcoming cabaret night.

There are better pubs in the area so I doubt that I will revisit here when next in Reading.

Had some decent wine here. Interior is pretty bland, pub has a pool table. No tv showing, claims to do poker and comedy nights.

Some years ago this was a popular stop for going to some Rock music gigs, the all black decor added to the atmosphere, now it is plain and not very interesting.
