Remains boarded-up, sadly.

Another licensee who is doing an excellent job with the beer. Skittle room and up-market darts still available, with beer garden to rear. Doing well.

A pub that has had more owners in the last few years than the Littlest Hobo, the latest incumbents are doing a good job in getting this place out of the doldrums and back to its best. Usually three ales on (St Austell Tribute, OSH and a guest) which are usually in pretty good nick. There’s now a plush dedicated darts area that gets some good use. Toilets are spik and span. Skittle alley has been done up a bit and is available for functions. Worth dropping in although it can sometimes be a bit quiet – too many pubs in Theale these days, let’s hope this one lasts.

Previous landlord had a nice mix of beers in a cosy, living room atmosphere. Food was pretty hearty for the price charged. I quite liked it. New landlord has revamped the place - now hospital blue walls, not a great look. 3-4 ales usually on now (Youngs Ordinary, Pride, Brakspear and Courage). Again, not bad, but uninspiring compared to previous. Ale is usually in decent nick, to give them their due. There's a skittles alley available, although I dunno whether it sees much use.

Planners at West Berkshire Council have rejected the application.
In their reasons for refusal planners said that the building, thought to date to pre-1879, was an attractive example of the nineteenth century development of the village.
The council also said that the plans failed to provide an appropriate scheme of works or off-site mitigation measures to cope with its impact on the village.

The Red Lion is an old fashioned pub with a friendly atmosphere. The pub certainly feels traditional and contains a Dartboard and Jukebox for entertainment. Definitely worth a visit on a Theale pub crawl.
