Old Boots left this review about The Commercial Hotel (JD Wetherspoon)

An old Victorian hotel opened out by Wetherspoons in trademark style, lots of darkish wood, carpet which is quite tasteful here, a mix of seating although mostly low for dining. Usual 5+5 hand pumps topped and tailed with T-bars, the casks are fairly well distributed with the evil triplets at one end, a lot of the beers were from Northern Whisper on this occasion. Busy even on a Tuesday lunchtime as you would expect, ditto punters. There’s a raised area to one side, the decor includes a panel about the Accrington Pals* as expected and some music posters and charcoal drawings, more and better than some ‘spoons have. Toilets are upstairs of course with more local interest panels on the stairs and corridors. The staff were mostly pretty good.

*The Pals battalions were a recruiting wheeze for the First World War Kitcheners new army, “serve with your pals from your town”, sadly when they were slaughtered like cattle on the Somme it had a devastating effect on their home towns. I found Accrington a very friendly place today and I expect it was more tight knit in 1914-18 so I hate to think what the pain of those days was like.

This is an original pub and hotel although it's not currently one of the JDW chain of hotels. Inside it's the usual open plan layout but split into areas with the bar at the rear right and a raised area over to the left. I came here on a Wednesday morning for breakfast and a pint so it wasn't busy.
The bar has ten hand pumps which had one unused, two ciders, the JDW Trio Of Doom, Naylors Lancashire, Coach House Gunpowder Mild, Three Bs Stokers Slake and one called Accy Bees which may have been a house beer.
I had the Stokers Slake which was in good nick and went down well with the breakfast.
This seemed quite a reasonable Spoons to me.

When I went in there seemed to be a lot of uncleansed tables, but, to be fair, this was soon rectified. Usual hand pumps on offer - an easy place to while away the time waiting for my train.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Commercial Hotel (JD Wetherspoon)

Attractive former hotel located opposite the impressive Market Halls building. Retains a relatively 'pub-like' interior, and has a pleasant part-covered patio beer garden to the rear. Reasonable choice from seven of 10 handpumps when I visited, including the Three B's Bee Blonde (£1.99). Certainly worth a stop if in the area.

At the moment, quite a few of the town centre pubs in Accrington are in a bit of a price war for the cheapest beer prices, which has made the new wetherspoons one of the dearest pubs around, with the cheapest lager over £2.70p a pint. Not sure of there policy here,if it is to keep the riff-raff out,or to try to claw money back after the expensive conversion.Called in on Saturday for a meal which was ok,but did notice the food prices were steeper than other JDW i have visited.

Although not the largest pub in the Wetherspoons chain,an admirable job has been undertaken on this 1.4 Million pound refurbishment. On entering the pub the bar faces you, with a raised platform to the left, and an open area, with a walled mural to the right followed by the customary bookcase, and to the far right is the fine large beer garden complete with commemorative clock (which looks a bit out of place)Amazingly when i approached the bar,was stuck for choice for service with a team of 5 barmaids to select from. (This is unknown territory for me at 11-30 in a JDW pub)After pinching myself to check i was not dreaming, the pampering continued, with a smile from the barmaid, other barstaff asking if i had been served, and finally my pint was topped up.Excellent service if this is kept up but sadly i think not.Quite a few guest beers were on offer as well as themed food nights.Steak Club Tues, and Curry Club on a Thursday
