The beer seems to have dropped down again, which is shame.

March 2014
Pretty building, very IKEA-like refit of a hotel bar, lots of white walls, pine-coloured and chocolate-coloured fittings. Music TV and funny-coloured lights. Nice view of the town centre from the windows and outside. Big on sports and a younger clientèle, very 'awight geezer' mockneyesque. Three ales, Pride, Doom and a guest on offer, usually decent. The 'boarded' floor is actually some sort of furry lino! Not my bag but might appeal to others.

An awful internal refurb has robbed the Village Bar of any pub atmosphere,a light wooden floor ,modern furniture,a faux wall mounted wood burner,a kiddies sweet machine and two flatscreens ,thankfully only one operation and on mute. What wasn't on mute was appalling rap muzak but the builders and geezers pertched on bar stools didn't seem to care,or maybe that had more to do with their consumption level of Grolsch.
The exterior looks quite inviting with attractive wooden windows, and maybe the hotel side of the operation is the true focus here.Just one handpump serving,on my trip,West Berkshire Mr Chubb's Lunchtime Bitter far too warm and in a Bombardier Glass.Oh dear.

This is a large hotel building in the centre of town at a busy road junction. The public area at the front is known as The Village Bar. It is unusual in so far that although the building itself is fairly old, with beamed ceilings and so on, the bar area has been done out in a bland modern style. The room is fairly small and rectangular, the light wood bar is straight ahead on entering. The floor is sanded boards, walls are brown and beige and there are high tables with stools and unbacked tall pouffe type things. Two recessed fake log fires each end. The TV had the rugby on. Two boards outside indicate the business is up for sale/lease, so hoping it will continue naturally, but the decor and ambience were not to my taste. Two pumps, Pride and Doom Bar; the Pride was ok, if a little cold.
