Graham Coombs left this review about Market House

A thoroughly modernised old Sheps pub and not in a good way, being a vivid example of what happens when you unleash a 'designer' with a vague brief - lots of random recycled woodwork, bare floorboards and some uncomfortable-looking benches. There is a 'wait to be seated' restaurant area to the rear and a roof terrace above. At least the two ales (Masterbrew and Whitstable Bay) seemed to be in good condition and there were various entertainments advertised: live music, quiz etc.

E TA left this review about Market House

A fairly average Shepherd Neame town pub, nicely restored to give it some traditional character at street level but over-modernised elsewhere. The upstairs room is primarily for functions and acts, though it had been taken over by a bunch of teenagers when we visited, using it as their safe space to escape from the nasty, bigoted grown-ups. Ales on were Spitfire, Creekside, Masterbrew and Whitstable Bay, plus a keg bank of Moretti, Guinness, Camden Hells, Spitfire Lager and Orchard View cider. The ales were too warm and in suboptimal condition. I wouldn’t make it a destination of choice and there is better ale to be had in other nearby pubs.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Market House

Previously Earls, but still known for live music following its change of name and ownership in 2018. Refurbished is a lighter semi-modern style and food is now more of a focus than previously. Small patio area at the front. As a Shepherd Neame house, Master Brew, Whitstable Bay Pale, Spitfire and the Christmas Ale (£5.05) were available from the four handpumps on this first visit for eight years.

Steve C left this review about Earls

I visited Earls on Friday afternoon last week and found a high street pub busy with locals watching the Ryder Cup via Sky Sports on the plasma screens. The interior is L shaped with the bar area at the front and tables at the rear that were set for diners. The bar is stocked with standard draught and the two hand pumps were drawing Bombardier and Hobgoblin. Pub grub is available from 11:00 until 16:00 Monday to Saturday and midday until 16:00 on Sundays. Entertainment is listed for most days of the week, but don’t wear a hat or take a dog as you’ll not be allowed in.
There are some picnic tables on the path out the front that were taken up by smokers.

The service was friendly and I thought that there was a good atmosphere in here for a high street pub. I would have no problem returning.

First positive, Earls looks and feels like a pub inside and out, not something that can be taken for granted in central Maidstone. There is generally a good vibe from a mature crowd. It is known for music and football, but it does these well and enthusiastically rather than as an afterthought, so you know what you will get. I somehow always seem to gravitate here during a night in Maidstone.
