A funny white and snot green exterior didn’t immediately make me think ‘pub’ but I went in anyway so I could say I’d done Whitchurch. Surprised to find three pumps, two of which were clipped and selling Black Sheep and Tim Taylor Landlord at a very reasonable £3pp, in decent nick by a friendly barmaid – nothing else to note beyond the usual keg assortment and a decent wine selection. The interior is split into two rooms, the bar is in the left and the right is given over to dining – food is obviously the main event here. Animal-related nik-naks are scattered about and there’s what appears to be an entire cow hide hung in the back corridor. But something wasn’t right – it was the smell. Damp dog. Strange, given that the carpet looked fairly new and there was no actual sign of a live dog anywhere. But there it was, wafting up my nose continually. Urgh, put me right off my beer.
So whilst it’s a fairly inoffensive foody pub selling a reasonable pint they need to get the old Shake and Vac out before I return again.
