Little change in the intervening years, although there is no longer any real ale.

June 2012
Rickety old two-bar pub that has had a recent lick of paint under new management. Usually has Courage Best on in surprisingly good condition and used to have Websters Green label on keg too a while back. Clientèle are quite gruff and ready. Watch out for the comedy on Reading FC match days, a massive hinged beam gets put across the inside of the front door like something out of the Sheriff of Nottingham's castle. The only exit is through the side door. I've seen a few shoppers being caught out by it, thinking they were locked in until sundown.

A small traditional pub of the kind that is becoming rarer year on year as new pubs take the gastro or craft bar route. Its very basic inside and the bar you enter from the main street is the smaller of the two, you can walk through to the back bar via a couple of doors, there is also a side door, only two handpumps ,one in each bar, both dispensing Courage Best, not the most exciting of beers but the quality was good. There is a jukebox in the rear bar which seemed to be playing some random tunes itself, I saw no one putting money into it,there was also a small TV screen on the wall.A nice reminder of how most pubs used to be, but time moves on and given the lack of beer choice I am not likely to return in the near future.

Feels like a locals pub, expect some people to be blocking the bar area when ordering your drink. The beer itself was ok, and I went for a pint of Courage Best. The pub feels somewhat on the cramped side and would probably not go here regularly.

Old Boots left this review about The Bugle

Low ceilinged, basic boozer, a traditional pub in a street of trashy modern outlets. Not to everyone's taste but an interesting and eccentric survivor. The street door leads into a small public bar with an unfortunately placed dart board. Beyond is the bar and behind that a larger more lounge like room. Beers from Wells and Youngs, Bombardier and Courage Best in this case, with a prosaic keg choice making up the numbers. A bunch of merry customers of various ages and genders served by a suitably eccentric landlord with an equally eccentric choice in music.

Cottage style pub with a small frontage and low ceilings. I imagine it is mainly frequented by regulars and it serves them well. Courage Best and Directors plus a keg mild that I don't often see.
