Quinno _ left this review about The Water Tower

Oh my word, what a remarkable descent into squalor and applling beer. Vinegar should go on chips, not in a pint glass. And the furnishings are shot to pieces. Do chimps usually frequent this place?

February 2013
Now refurbished, re-opened and called the Water Tower. Inside looks quite neat in a modern, chain-pub way (it's an M&B place). A couple of mainstream ales on offer at competitive prices. Quality has been fairly good so far. Main focus is on cheap-end food. Staff are friendly and seemingly on-the-ball; the Roland from Grange Hill lookalike who served me the other week actually seemed to have a bit of knowledge about the beer he was serving.

Reviewed as The Bear
Semi-famous in Reading as the Western terminus for the 17. Place was turned into a Thai pub and failed (they didn't know what they were doing with the beer!) and it now stands idle. Wetherspoons aren't interested (too far away from the shops), so I guess it'll end up as housing. Made the Good Beer Guide a number of times in the 1980's.
