I visited the Monument on a recent Wednesday afternoon when the only other customers were two locals sat at the bar talking to the governor. There are two handpumps which were drawing Sharp’s Doom Bar and TT Landlord. Standard and premium keg range was also available.
There is seating to the right and left of the entrance and on the left hand wall faced by the bar. At the rear is a pool table and dartboard and out the back is an enclosed patio area with seating and a television. There is also a television in the bar area for showing Sky Sports. I didn’t rate this place and it certainly wasn’t worth the walk to the end of the high street.

A traditional basic boozer,a low beamed ceiling and flagstone floor. Four hand pumps with a choice of Doom Bar, Hobgoblin, West Berks Good Old Boy and Butts Traditional ,the latter being in good shape, not the best beer range in town but a decent place.

This is quite an old skool, multi area'ed pub. Low beamed (original?) ceilings, black and white agricultural pics plus brewerania on the walls. Flagstone floor. Left area was set up for a band and live music is heavily pushed. A basic rear smokers area only partiality covered, populated by a couple of Neanderthal punters but that's par for course in Newbury (they must all come from Thatcham?) though the other punters who were inside seemed a bit more normal. Another pub in town with a sit-down arcade machine that looked in working order. Pool table and darts. There’s an odd little room with mid-1990’s styled sofas off to the right by the toilets. Four pumps with three ales (West Berks GOB, Doom Bar and Butts Traditional) and Thatchers Heritage cider. My Butts was in pretty good shape and it’s worth a visit for that. My original description of ‘rough-round-the-edges boozer’ still applies but in a town lacking a first-rate alehouse, this is worth a look.

Rough-round-the-edges boozer, but does stock Butts brewery beers (condition varies) and a real cider. Landlord chatty, music loud (live at weekends). Wouldn't particularly want to pop in without company, but not too bad a place. Rating 6.

Old Boots left this review about The Monument

Double fronted cottage style exterior, inside there appears to have been a central corridor with rooms off to each side but it is now vaguely open plan with some partioning between the spaces. The counter takes up the right hand side with handpumps for one strongish ale from Marstons and two rough ciders. A friendly eccentric place attracting all sorts and ages the beer quality is OK but the craic is the best I came across in Newbury.
