Malden man left this review about The Old Wick

This dates from 2008 but as the pub is gone I'd rather leave my notes:

I've just reread the GBG entry write up for this pub and I'm wondering if the writer was somewhere else. "friendly staff make everyone feel welcome...." No dogs rule", what about the one wandering round the place?

I don't like to post negative reviews, as I try to choose pubs I think I will like but this was a wrong un. On entering the barman/landlord seemed totally put out to have to actually go round to the service side of the bar and serve us, sorry to disturb your chat with your cronies fella.

Beers are Sheps but only two on, Kent Best and Spitfire. Signs around the place suggest this is a community pub with all kinds of activities and events on, but there were just a few of the in-crowd and the landlord around yesterday. We didn't feel welcome at all.

Roger Button left this review about The Old Wick

The Old Wick is (or rather was) a Shepherd Neame pub situated at the end of the village and was often one of the final ports of call on what is a half decent little pub crawl in the village.

It has always struck me as being a fairly calm, relaxed and comfortable place for a couple of pints with the single room interior containing several old sporting pictures and caricatures on its paneled walls, a couple of basic TV’s and a friendly pub cat and dog to keep you entertained.

My last visit saw 3 ales available, Bishops Finger, Whistable Bay and Spitfire but a recent trip to update my notes found limited opening hours in place and it was closed. Sadly it has now gone one step further and recently shut for good with plans afoot to convert it into flats pending planning permission. It was never an particularly essential place to visit but was always a reliable and safe option for a visit.
