I popped into the Old London Apprentice on a recent sunny Wednesday afternoon. There was one person in the pub and two were sat outside on the front decked seating area shielded from the sunlight by a jumbrella. There is more outside seating in the form of picnic tables on a tarmacked area to the left of the pub. Without the picnic tables I would have thought this was a large car park.
Inside the pub there is a bar area with seating is to the right with bar counter on the rear wall facing the entrance. To the left is more seating and a dartboard. Being over the road from Newbury Racecourse I wasn’t surprised to see the television airing a horse racing channel, although I noted that Sky Sports is also available. There is a jukebox that was silent. The bar supports four handpumps, two of which were unused which left Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker and Fuller’s London Pride as the cask ale options. There was also a standard and premium keg range alongside plenty of gins. Through the back of the bar a covered pool table and a second dartboard are visible in the rear bar which is available for hire. The governor was polite, but I got the feeling he doesn’t put up with any funny business. I don’t see a return visit on the cards.

The local CAMRA branch give off the impression that things have much improved here since my previous visit, so off I went to see. It hasn’t, really; a dirty and dusty floor, a naff knocked-through interior in beige and snot colours, plus horse racing on for the benefit of the local gambling addict. Two cask available, the dullest pairing imaginable round here of Doom Bar and Pride, the latter of which was poor (NBSS 1.5) and served in a Guinness glass. That’ll teach me.

Unkempt knocked-through boozer. Karaoke already in full swing at 5.30pm on Sunday. Pride and 6X; the Pride was excruciatingly terrible. An Enterprise pub up ‘to let’ and it showed. Rated 2

A plain interior served 2 real ales. Located a short walk from Newbury racecourse.
